What becomes of old studios when channels die?

A few years ago there was many channels broadcasting live from various locations, some from proper television studios others from less impressive surroundings. I am thinking of channels and programmes such as Avago, Nation 217/277, Game in TV, The Great Big British Quiz, Quizmania and Quiz Call to name just a few.

There was some obvious studio swapping amongst some of these channels, when Game in TV closed down their studio was used a short while later, visually unchanged, by YouPlay. Where was this studio? Who owns it and what is it being used for now?

Avago's second studio (although "conservatory" might be a more accurate description), "The Pod" was taken over by Nation 217/277 sometime before Avago closed with no attempt being made to change the look of the studio/set or hide the fact that it was one of Avago's old homes.

I'm thinking there must be other less obvious examples of the same studio being used by more than one channel/company but the average viewer being unaware that it is in the same physical space. Especially when it comes to small quiz, gaming and shopping channels who don't actually own their own studios. Do you have any examples?

I'd specifically like to know what has become of the studios used by The Money Channel/Avago/Nation 217 in Wapping. I think they are still occupied by Mirada, a company borne of out the company behind Avago. I believe these were once state of the art studios, paid for by the singer Adam Faith during the digital television boom, so it would be interesting to find out what has become of them.

With the demise of the quiz channel happening around the same time as the rise of the 'babe channel'. Are all these old studios now used by topless young ladies?

I'm keen to read any interesting studio stories from those in the know.

I know the Gems TV studio where made much smaller to make way for call centre room.

Someone like Nick Harvey might be able to help here. Someone told me the studios now used by Gems TV in Redditch were once used as overspill studios for BBC Birmingham and shows such as Howards Way were shot there. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Nick is that Northam? If so it doesn't even look like that anymore, it's just a flat wasteland now. Sad. For those who weren't aware Nicks photo is of the demolition of the old Meridian/TVS studios in Northam Southampton.. At least I think it is..

I think a lot of the channels mentioned in the original post at the top of the thread were probably based in relatively cheap warehouse or office space - rather than being built 'ground up' as studios. If they're no longer used for TV production - they're probably back as office or warehouse space...

I think that the people backing The Money Channel described them as state-of-the-art - and they may have had some decent automation and desktop-editing system that allowed them to work with fewer staff than the main channels used at the time, but I don't recall The Money Channel looking that great on-screen (particularly in lighting and camera terms - which is what proper studios are designed to deliver, along with decent sound).

IIRC, Quiz Call used to come from Teddington Studios near London, so presumably it's now just rented by a different company.

Pebble Mill is a baron wasteland with boreholes dug in it, now slowly being turned into a dental hospital. Perhaps the saddest part about it all was when I visited it in 2010 the stairs to reception, the bottom two, were still standing, and there was a very small sticker, weathered down with the 1986 corporate logo on it and ' IN THE MIDLANDS - PEBBLE MILL '. The one photo I really wanted to take whilst in the site (yes, it was illegal, but nothing was stolen and nothing damaged) didn't work Sad

The urban explorer's mantra: 'take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints'

Talking of which, 28 Days Later has lots of photos taken inside Central TV in Birmingham over the last few years, though they've dried up since and demolition work started, the interior was stripped... and then stopped again.
