Presumably then the station would need to change its name to "Tyne Tees, Ouse, Wear, Tweed, Nith, Eden and Caldew Television."

There is the old (probably apocraphal) story of the original name they rejected - ' T yne W ear a nd T ees'

There's an element of truth in that one - hence the original theme, the "Three Rivers Fantasy".

There's also the story of the original name suggested for the Grampian area - S cottish H ighlands and I slands T elevision, apparently rejected when it was realised just what the initials would spell out.

Well, Stuart Hall (of It's A Knockout, BBC North West & Football Commentary fame) had the foolish idea of setting up a company in the 80s called S tuart H all I nternational T ravel.

I believe it didn't last long Rolling Eyes

Not the only foolish thing he's done, bearing in mind he provides the opening voiceover to Glitterball.

I must say I find the TV advert refering to STV North rather odd, especially as the channel is never refered to on screen as "stv north" and is refered to as "Grampian" in all other digital UK propaganda.

Reminds me of the proposed name for the University of Northumbria at Newcastle - C ity U niversity of N ewcastle upon T yne. That would have been interesting.

"Which uni do you go to?"
"The C UNT"

Nice to see that the adverts placed on ITV to advise the changeover dates to digital are using the "old/correct regional names".

Lovely to hear ITV West referred to as the "HTV West" region - No doubt a small cheer goes up at Bath Road when these adverts play out.

That didn't last for long - they have revoiced the variation for the HTV West region to "viewers in the west television region". I wonder if ITV plc requested this?

Digital UK also seem to be completely ignoring the Channel TV region, as there's no mention of it on their website.

That's because the Channel Islands are not part of the UK, and officially separate from the UK's transmitter/broadcasting network (hence not under Digital UK's remit). Digital UK will, however, provide assistance to the CI authorities with their own switch.
