It would have been too expensive to have created a studio that was the same as the main news studio, and ITV wanted a uniformed output on both channels. So they can simulcast without it looking to disjointed.

RE: Presenter change. It would mean the presenter having to run from one studio to the next during the commercial break. Much easier to shove someone else on for that 15 min segment.

They are longer than 15 minute segments BTW.

The evening news has 45 minutes to prep.

Re: ITV Regional News

A generic style ITV Regional News look could easily be brought in but still keeping individual studios, titles e.t.c. The kind of style I mean is like the new look BBC Sport, where all programmes have their own titles/ studio e.t.c., but have standardised astons and logos. These could easily be copied for ITV News.

And there is my first idea for a mock request!

Also, the new look Central News (West) could easily be taken as an interpretation of the main ITV News titles, yet given a very individual twist.

A quote from the Digital Spy article about Alistair Stewart's return to ITV News is quite interesting regarding regional news.

Quote:
"I will also carry on presenting a reduced London Tonight - if there's a war, regional news bulletins will diminish. The attraction in them for me is simply that I was there 12 years ago in war one."

I think it is quite possible that the ITV Evening News may start at 6pm, and run for a full hour, with about a 20 min regional news opt out during the programme?

Also, I expect the ITV News at Nine will be a full half hour of national and international news, with the regional news still showing at 11/11.30pm

Is Alistair Stewart that one who does Police Camera Action?

Yes he is, he also presented News at 10 back in the day!

And presents London News Networks' London Tonight.

Speaking of Alastair Stewart, it was quite unusual back in 1991 on News At Ten. Alastair Burnet was leaving - two Alastairs on one programme?

I seem to remember 1991/1992 being quite a big year for news on ITV/News at Ten. Sandy Gall and Alistair Burnet retired, other presenters like John Suchet, Nicholas Owen, Carol Barnes and Julia Somerville were re-assigned to other bulletins, leaving Trevor McDonald as top dog on News at Ten in a big move for the programme - a switch to single anchor. Before that it had been (I think) the first news bulletin in the world to have TWO presenters. Alistair Stewart left ITN with no doubt some hurt feelings after the News at Ten gig went to Trevor. All the changes paved the way for Dermot Murnaghan to arrive. I think there's no doubt about it - news on ITV definitely had the best presenters/format in the 1990's - lunch with Dermot Murnaghan and Carol Barnes/Julia Somerville, early evening with John Suchet, News at Ten with Trevor McD, and weekends with Nick Owen and Carol Barnes. Compare that to BBC news who had 5 million presenters for each bulletin - now its reversed ITV have got less experienced presenters, while the BBC have probably got a better format and presenters right now. Weird how these things switch around. Despite all this ITV news does sound much better in the last few months.

Indeed. And no doubt it will swap around again in the future, when the more experienced BBC News Presenters Leaves. Quite interesting watching these cycles isn't it!

The presenting teams on BBC News on BBC ONE and ITV News on ITV1 are quite similar at the moment.

On BBC, Michael Buerk and Peter Sissons left, on ITV Dermot Murnaghan left.

Then you've got Fiona Bruce and Sophie Raworth, who are quite similar in experience and seriousness to Katie Derham and Mary Nightingale.

On BBC there's Jane Hill, on ITV its Leyla Daybelge

I'd say that Trevor McDonald and John Suchet may possibly be more serious than Huw Edwards who is probably the BBC's Number 1 presenter thesedays

I didn't know Sissons was leaving the BBC.
