I remember that she also presented coverage of Princess Diana's funeral on Bloomberg. But I think she was a studio guest rather than the actual presenter. She's certainly never presented rolling news before.

Could you count Simply Money as rolling news? She was a regular presenter of that.

Hmmm, It would be nice to see Jan Leeming on the ITV News Channel as well... just to complete the hattrick of Simply Money presenters (as Carol Barnes did that too).

Words cannot describe how fab Angela was though. I only wish I'd seen Carol too, does anyone have any grabs of her presenting?

More big faces from the past returning to ITV News (well the ITV News Channel)

Check this out courtsey of Media Guardian.co.uk

Quote:
Alastair Stewart, the face of London Tonight, is returning to ITV News more than a decade after leaving News at 10 to report on a possible war against Iraq.

If the war goes ahead, Stewart will report for the ITV News Channel from the UK as part of an expanded team that will also include veteran newsreader Angela Rippon.

Although it is not yet known exactly what role Stewart will play, the veteran newscaster, who covered the first Gulf war for ITV, said he was "thrilled" to be returning.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to bits to confirm that following discussions with Steve Anderson [ITV's controller of news and current affairs] and David Mannion [editor of ITN news] I've been able to win the generous support of my employers at LNN that in the event of a war I will certainly be doing stuff at ITN on the News Channel," Stewart said.

"I will also carry on presenting a reduced LNN - if there's a war, regional news bulletins will diminish. The attraction in them for me is simply that I was there 12 years ago in war one."

Correspondents from ITV's main news bulletins, including international editor Bill Neely and Andrea Catherwood, will provide round-the-clock coverage from war zones and diplomatic hotspots on the ITV News Channel.

Or go to the website Media Guardian.co.uk - Stewart returns

I wonder how much ITN are paying these people!

Are old faces cheaper than young presenters!

Bloody hell, Alastair Stewart back at ITN!!!!! They really are sorting themselves out before the war kicks off. This is quite clearly an admission that their current team just isn't experienced enough to hold coverage of a war.

The News Channel now have the following heavyweight presenters.

Andrew Harvey
Alastair Stewart
Angela Rippon
Carol Barnes
John Suchet
Nicholas Owen

I think it's looking pretty good for ITV news now.

They've made it clear Catherwood and Neely will be out and about, leaving just Derham and Deybelge as their only ITV1 female presenters. I wonder if we'll see Barnes and Rippon back on ITV1???

Interesting that the guardian are also reporting that the main presenters on 1 will be joining News 24 to 'beef' up its coverage. I'd love to see Anna Ford sat at the News 24 desk, possibly with her old pal Philip Hayton.

DOH- forgot about Simply Money! (Still, easily done, I guess...).

Wasn't that Jan Harvey (who used to star in BUGS!) instead of Jan Leeming, though?

As for all these veteran presenters, it can only be a good thing. David Mannion is obviously a veteran himself, so he clearly appreciates the value of experience in times of war. Admittedly, it does sound just a little bit 'novelty' (like when Five News hired veteran reporters to do special reports). But the new recruits will certainly make ITV's coverage extremely competitive.

Of course, wars are always an opportunity for young reporters to prove their worth, so it would be a shame if the 'drafted' veterans stopped this from happening. But I can't really see that happening - if this war goes ahead, I think it will be as much Mark Austin's or Bill Neely's as anyone else's.

By the way, I could see Alastair Stewart doing some sort of 'illustrative' role, and presiding over ITV's virtual reality graphics. After all, he was Peter Snow's opposite number on ITV's 1997 election night coverage.

Well, lately Dermot Murnaghan did all ITV's virtual graphics until he left, while James Mates has been in the virtual studio alot lately for Iraq reports.

Re: ITV News Wales - didn't think it would be long. It's still HTV News on screen though.

Also, re the ITV News at Nine. I hope ITV do still have a later bulletin. For me, 10pm is too early and I more often watch the late ITV News when it's on after 10.30pm. Are there any viewing figures which compare ratings for the bulletin when it's on at 10pm to when it's on in a later slot?

Will HTV News now be called ITV News Wales? And if so when does this start?

As ITV are trying to get all the regions to have one look do you think that the regions will loose their own news studios in favour for a generic look like with BBC regions have?
