ITV has admitted that competing against BBC One with News at Ten has been a failure and is to seek a permanent 10.30pm slot for its main bulletin.
Viewers have abandoned the ITV bulletin, dubbed “News at When?” because its place in the schedules moves around. MPs complained that viewers were denied choice on the three nights a week when the ITV1 and BBC One bulletins clash at 10pm. About 5.2 million viewers tuned in to BBC One last Wednesday night, compared with 4.5 million watching ITV1.
Steve Anderson, ITV’s Controller of News and Current Affairs, said: “I was always unhappy about having our news head-to-head with the BBC.” He told Television, the journal of the Royal Television Society, that the ITV companies want to broadcast an ITV Nightly News at 10.30pm each weeknight instead.
ITV must gain approval from the Independent Television Commission for a further change. The BBC was delighted at ITV’s apparent capitulation and said: “Viewing figures testify that BBC has been dominant when the bulletins go head-to-head. We wish ITV well.”
ITV’s late evening news audience has dropped by a third since it began tinkering with the schedule four years ago. Greg Dyke, the BBC Director-General, seized the 10pm slot when the commercial network moved its bulletin back to 11pm, in a bid to clear the schedules for more ratings-grabbing programmes. The broadcasting regulator instructed ITV to return the news to 10pm but the network found the slot already occupied by BBC One.
An Independent Television Commission report said ratings had fallen for the ITV nightly news because viewers could not be sure what time it would begin.
