The Region 1 DVDs of Mr Bean have the 'skyline' Thames frontcap too, apparently, which is weird as the first one was shown in 1990, after frontcaps went.

Also, suely Thames had their triangular logo (albeit that the triangle had a shrunk-down, reflection-less "skyline" sitting atop it) by the time Mr Bean existed, rather than the classic 1970s/80s skyline?

Maybe it's just an especially-for-DVD thing, to put the classic ident at the beginning? Maybe this is a DVD trend created in the wake of Ant & Dec's Gameshow Marathon? Let's hope it continues!

That front cap also parodied on an episode of the simpsons when Homer is watching a british sitcom on PBS.

IIRC many of the ITV companies continued making programmes with frontcaps for a while after the network ditched them. Quite often you'd hear the final note of a frontcap fading out, just before a programme began.

Presumably they were still shown on exported shows.

I think Yorkshire did the same aswell, the Liquid Gold frontcap was still used Regionally after 1988, when Paramount showed the 1989 series of The New Statesman (I haven't checked the DVD of this series yet, but Network are rather well behaved) they still had the Liquid gold frontcap on screen.

There were some companies who would add the frontcap on the Original TX but it's left off the actual film, I believe LWT did this. If you have Watching on DVD from Network, then the Granada frontcap isn't there, but the endcap is, this is from 1987 BTW.

Yes several stations did. I know for a fact that TVS did (TT were showing eps of "All Clued Up" as late as 1991 with the frontcap intermittently broadcast at the start), YTV was another, and TT themselves did the same -- I recall that in 1997 they showed a few 1992 repeats of Northern Eye complete with frontcaps (this was bang in the middle of the C3NE period so it was a slightly confusing sight for non-pres anoraks).

I have a few episodes of Mr. Bean that were recorded on VHS in the mid-90s and they are preceded by the old mirror skyline with the Salute to Thames fanfare. (I think they had the triangular logo at the end, but am not sure)

I would like to speculate that they continued to put the classic ident before their programmes even after 1989. The idents that followed the mirror skyline were the anniversary ident and the 1989 generic, and they were perhaps not suitable as pre-programme logos.

...

As we are talking about old ITV front- and endcaps, I felt the urge to post this one that I recorded a few weeks ago:

Bear in mind that the Thames spoof only appeared on screen for about half a second, though. No music or animation either.
