By the way do Challenge only show the Carlton episodes of Catchphrase, do they have the rights to the older TVS versions?

They did back in the days before Saban got hold of the TVS archive which now appears to be unowned at all.

So you are saying that Saban don't own the TVS programmes at all?

Who does? I noticed there was a TVS drama on ITV3 not too long ago, so surely it couldn't be that difficult to get rights to TVS-era Catchphrase, okay it looks very dated, but it was fantastic. Other than Bullseye and It's A Knockout, I cannot think of anything from the 1980's that's being shown on a regular basis on Challenge.

And that is a crime, given that the 1970s/80s was probably the golden age of the gameshow.

Blankety Blank is regularly shown on Challenge as well I think. Challenge really need to take a long hard look at themselves, because they've deviated from their remit drastically over the last year or two.

If you look at the US version of Challenge, GSN, they are achieving very decent ratings from their repeats of the multitude of old gameshows in the archives over there. Given that ITV in particular absolutely loaded their schedules with gameshows in the 1980s, surely there is a decent selection of cheap shows on offer? The old daytime shows pushed out by the regionals in particular (Anglia, TVS, HTV, TTTV etc) must be available for peanuts, and a lot of them were pretty good.

Doesn't NTL-Telewest have a majority share in Flextech? If so, this could be a golden opportunity for ITV if they merge with NTL to really beef up Challenge for little or no cost.

Well it was a good few years back...

Wouldn't even say it was that good in the early 90's TBH. Corel Draw 4 (released in 1993) came stuffed full of pre-rendered texture fills similar to the backdrop of that endcap. The generic Gil Sans font used was installed in myriads of computers, and Truetype fonts had been introduced the previous year with Windows 3.1, which allowed things like the now ubiquitous TV logos font to exist.

Anyone could make a reasonable copy of that endcap from scratch today with the minimal of skill and nothing more than Corel Draw...thing is, they could do the same in the early 90's to when that thing was current. And if the layman can make it in minutes, how long do you think it took the professional?

There's nothing that isn't owned by someone. Saban were bought by Disney, so if they owned the TVS programme archive then Disney will own it now - whether they know that they own it or where it is, is anothe rmatter!

I did some research into this a long time ago, it was a long time ago so most of this is from memory so don't take it as gospel.

Saban only held the rights to some former networked programmes, these became part of the MTM archive when TVS was sold to International Family Entertainment and at some point that got sold to Saban. These programmes as you say are now owned by DIsney - ITV3 recently showed Inspector Wexford (some episodes complete with the Buena Vista distribution castle at the end).

I never really managed to find out what happened to the other networked programmes that weren't held in the Meridian archives. It's quite possible Flextech own or owned them at some point as they owned the company at one point - the Maidstone studios were held in the TVS Television name until they were sold off a few years ago!

Most of the programmes Meridian held - mainly local have gone off to a few locations now. Some to the Wessex Film Archive - including some promotional tapes that would be of interest to many a pres-fan.

That has to be one of the most uninspired encaps ever produced.

A background that can be created in Photoshop in under 30 seconds, with two standard logos and a typeface that doesn't match the rest of it. Looks like a mock to be perfectly honest.

Here's another one

Did everyone still use the "for ITV" at this stage, this is from around 1996/7

They did I think right up until they dropped the IT* in 1998, I certainly remember LWT still using them in early 1998 around about the same time that Carlton/LWT branded trailers dissapeared

ISTR that the cap above was followed by a very short lived 'Carlton Production for ITV' endcap, it wasn't the one with the plant in the background, it was another one that looked like a planet.

Can't say I've ever seen that sort of Carlton UK endcap before, it was never the style at the time. They introduced Carlton UK, and then they went back to Central AIUI, then eventually to Carlton in 1999.

The Carlton UK productions caption with the firey planet was used at the end of all Carltons programmes for a while (after the takeover of Central) as well as the usual caption for Central/Carlton.

It's similar to the LWTP (LWT Productions) slide that used to appear on the end of LWTs shows for a while

Here's the LWT you mention, just found it on the web:
