Depends on the region you're talking about -- still plenty of local adverts up here.

(Obviously the smaller the area the more likely a small company will be able to afford to advertise).

Do you still get the local adverts for small local companies?

We still have lots of London only adverts on all 3 channels but what we don't get are the adverts for things like shops like we used to

Yes but because of things like the CRR formula and the lack of programmes overnight, there are far fewer cheap slots that small companies can afford.

Lots of local ads in the Border area as well

Lottie Long-Legs
Redvers Kyle, anyone...?

Redvers retired some years ago.

On the local ads front, try Channel TV - I think they still have a lot of very localised ads, some just a couple of stills with a voiceover.

Or indeed UTV -- many ad-breaks, even in prime-time, seem to be made up almost entirely of local shops. More so even than in the 1980s I'd say.

As for TTTV -- yes there are still quite a number of local company ads, although after taking more notice over the last few days (I don't watch ITV much any more, and when I do I tend to flick over to UTV) it does seem that they are on the decline as against 2 or 3 years ago even.

Which, in the true spirit of old-school ITV, are often voiced by the station's announcers - who, lest we forget, have worked at the station, on and off in one case, since 1993 - albeit they are all now pre-recorded and are now mainly live-action than just a caption.

Then again, you'll usually get two or three ads per break for a UTV Media plc subsiduary these days... Wink

Where has Mark Lipscombe been before? Anything memorable? I can distinctly remember the name, but I have no idea why.

Thames and Carlton London. Read the news for Central South/Thames Valley Tonight.

Thames Valley Tonight is where I remember him from. I believe he presented the last bulletin before Thames Valley turned into Meridian.

Think he retired from TV after that, never heard anything else from him

Not quite, I spotted him one Saturday afternoon reading Meridian South's news some months after the closure of Thames Valley

This ad break from Grampain shows the station announcer voicing three ads in succession, all of which are still captions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn4BIOpNYek&feature=related

When did this practice stop?

In the 80s, caption-style ads like this were loaded into the cart machine (just like any other advert). ISTR that Tyne Tees did not even use their regular announcers for these, usually using this chap:

(Can anyone identify him btw? Been bugging me for years that one).

Presumably "live" ads stopped when the first wave of automation came in -- this must have been before Channel Four started.
