Mike Embley on Newsroom South-East a few months back...
After terrible sound on a report, we eventually cut back to the studio and a
totally
unprepared Mike. The thing was, it wasn't even a sudden problem - surely someone must have said to him 'look Mike, we're having problems and liable to cut back to you at any second.' Anyway, there he was first looking at the wrong camera, apologising, then shuffling some papers, then apologising, then saying 'give me a minute!'. He seemed really annoyed (in polite terms) that they cut back to him.
Cheers, Asa

I think BBC Look North Leeds is very tacky, all the time.
Each time the headlines from the national finishes (1,6 and 10) you can always see the cropping bars at the top and bottom of the screen being added to make it look widescreen. Why can't they get real and produce it in widescreen? Even I have a widescreen digital video camera!!
Gordon Burns on NWT last week was pretty awful.
Not only did he totally mess up the start of the programme but in an interview, Gordon and the correspondent started speaking at the same time.
Then realising they were both speaking they both stopped. But neither of them started again until they both realised that neither of them was going to say anything, at which point Gordon promptly cut in.
Bit of a disaster.
But without doubt the worst bit of 'presenting' I have ever seen was on Granada during a GMTV bulletin.
Granada obviously didn't realise GMTV were going to be going to regional news at a certain time and didn't have a newsreader in the studio.
So we are left with an empty desk with nothing at all.
Suddenly a woman (not the newsreader) comes running to the desk and *attempts* to read the autocue.
This was a disaster and half way through she was cut into by a report.
After the report had finished the person at the desk had changed, this time it was a man (still not the newsreader), he too tried to read the autocue, and totally failed, again being cut into by a report.
Finally after that report had finished another woman (again, not the newsreader) was sitting at the desk with the earpiece falling out. She looked around her and then looked at the clock and said.... 'Goodbye', and they then returned to GMTV.
One of the best TV moments I have ever seen.
Oh yes, and when the ITN News Channel were doing test transmissions.
They knew only about 3 people were watching so kept making the worst mistakes ever.
Things such as putting adverts in instead of reports and not realising they were on air.... all funny stuff.

Cool! Did anyone manage to capture than? I would love to see it!

Suspect you are talking about a DTL. If it was, it sounds like a satellite delay. The Beeb are increasingly using Sat Vans for OS's. The delay can be anything upto a second depending on the path the signal takes
Hi there - slightly off topic - but I have seen a number of satellite links where the delay has been between 2 and 3 seconds... The BBC News link to Sydney used for the Olympis last year had a huge delay - possibly over 3'...
You can sort of get away with that on a DTL interview just, but it gets more interesting when you have a presenter at the other end of the satellite link and you have to cue them early, and hope you haven't done it *too* early (meaning they would start talking before they are back in-vision!)
It is not unusual for a director to test the delay on a link by asking the presenter at the remote location to wave or start talking when they are cued as a rehearsal - it's amazing how long it can take. The dangerous thing is to assume all OBs come back via satellite though - some still come back via microwave link - and have no appreciable delays!!!
As I understand it the delay is worse on the new digital satellite links used (as these need to store a lot of video frames to compress the pictures), which can also use the satellite to get the sound from the studio to the satellite truck, as well getting the sound from the satellite truck back to the studio.
This gives you a lovely double delay - the studio sound takes a second or so to get to the satellite truck, and then the sound from the sat truck takes a further second or so to get back! What fun...
