As a festive Twist to Square Eye's Official Christmas Ident Thread (and a fabulous thread it is too), I thought it would be great fun to recall favourite idents of Christmas Past. Most channels had festive idents every yuletide
and Christmas Programmes seemed more enhanced because of them.
Does anyone remember a specific ident at Christmas that has stuck in their mind as being great? In 1982 and 1983 BBC1 used two variations of snowflakes that were great to look at. But 1993 on BBC2 was superb.
It was a tudor style setting with a giant 2 being dragged by jester type characters and then finally heaved onto the top of a Christmas tree.
I was quite fond of 1998's giant red bauble on BBC1 too. In 1987 TVS had a wonderful festive logo aswell.

Well it will go down well with me certainly. My all-time favourites:

Cheap and mechanical they were, but these idents were as much a part of Christmas as The Two Ronnies and the Queen. Now, for the first time ever, we're not having anything new. BBC Pres, hang your heads in shame.

AAAARGGGHH!!!

I remember being at best underwhelmed when that was introduced. It may look cheap and tacky now - but believe me, it looked cheap and tacky in 1985 as well. I have a soft spot for the very earliest Christmas ident I can remember, from 1981 (image from The TV Room):

And 20 years later, the final variant of the balloon was rather sweet:

And the worst have to be the 1998 baubles (very dull) and the 2002 snowflake kids (cringeworthy).

One of my favourites is the BBC1 ident from 1991, as that was one of my earliest memories, same with the Granada Christmas ident from 1990, it's the one where the blue rectangle became a tag being held by string with some holly at the top of it, as they made a dull ident look nice. One of my other favourites is the Granada one from 1996, as that had some great music composed for it and there were so many jolly varations of it, it was very cool. The 1998 and 1999 idents were well done too, even though they were close to being generic, but they were nice.

But the Channel 4 one from 1995 used to scare the living sh*t out of me. The animals and the music were very creepy.

I'd have to say - even though they were pretty recent by comparison - the Carlton idents of a couple of years ago have to be the most timeless and innovative of ITV's in the last 5 years IMO.

I'm quite fond of the following idents:

1. BBC One, 1999. The tune was a nice play on the regular one.

2. BBC One, 2001. Very enchanting. Nice car too Wink

3. BBC One, 2002. Sorry people, but I can't help liking this one. True, it looks like it should be on CBeebies, but the tune is very christmassy!

4. Carlton, 1999-2002. As much as I dislike Carlton, I loved their presentation. It was outstanding, with incredible music and graphics. It's a shame the idents didn't say "Central" and "Westcountry" on them though. Ah, well.

Thanks to The TV Room for those images.

BBC2 Christmas 1982 - rotating perspex trees. Sounds pretty naff now, but I adored it when I saw it:

Ah yes, the 1975 globe. Spooky how much it resembles the COW, which was another ten years away!
