Just seen a new one (well for me anyway) - set on a bowling green, bits of hedge move through the air till they form a shadow of the '4' above one of the rinks.
Bit stereotypical of all bowlers being OAPs, but good al the same
I do like the idents a little more now, but they would be so much more effective if there was a system similar in principle to this:
1 - The first part of the ident plays, with softer music
2 - As the "4" is about to form, the ident slows down rapidly, and freezes at the point when the "4" is fully formed
3 - A transparent box-type-thing appears around the "4", the music is turned down and the announcer says his/her piece
4 - Once the announcer has finished talking, a different, much louder (and, depending on the ident, harder) piece of music plays, as the box-type-thing fades away, the ident is resumed and continues to its conclusion
That idea, as crap as it may be, is an example of how these idents could be made bolder without losing any of the cleverness and classiness that they already possess.
Quite a few traces of the old boxed logo still remain, it's still visible on Teletext on 4 (both analogue and digital), plus on the interactive service, and on the endcap of Richard and Judy... (Plus it made a split second appearance at the end of A Place In The Sun).
The sheer scale of the formed up 4 in the New York and Pylon ident is awesome. I also like the fact that there is no end point, so we just get that fleeting image.
I must admit, I haven't been able to take in what the announcer says as I'm too busy looking at the symbol.
Channel 4 News studio revamp is really good, fresh and it's not absent from the original studio design which works well. At least they have replaced that dreadful videowall with a decent screen!
