Is the thread for 9/11 still around. Does Asa have any plans to put it on for a bit?

I see Sky News are dropping the slug for their 9/11 astons today. Royal funeral style, if you see what I mean.

I was up around 1 pm GMT and had BBCA on TV. It was a regular BBC World News bulletin with Lindsay Brancher. When she signed off , she mentiond there would be coverage within minutues.

At :30 past the hr, the channel cut into BBC World, with a news summary and then live coverage with Ian Pannell at the WTC. At 2 pm GMT, BBCA cut off and went back to regular programming.

Nicholas Owen fronted today's coverage on the ITV News Channel until 2.30pm when Chris Rogers took over

There was a prog of CNN last night at 10pm which was excellent.

They had film of the newsroom when the first plane struck - it was just mad, loads of people running around!

They had one of the anchors who was told, "Get to the set NOW! We're going into Breaking News!"

Then one of the blokes from CNN working at the Pentagon, but on the other side from which was hit. He got a camera from his office and pointed it down the corridor in the direction of the impact in case the fire spread and they could get a live feed. Unfortunately he didn't have a long enough cable - and fortunately the fire didn't spread that far.

The first plane?....... are they psychic at CNN centre?

The first coverage of the attack on most TV stations was a quite casual 'oh look there's smoke coming from one of the buildings' . The first plane hitting was not shown on TV and it was a while after the fire started to be shown on TV (remember there weren't routinely cameras pointing at the WTC, they had to be switched on/set up) that a plane strike was confirmed.

I've seen this doc before.... what exactly were they doing filming behind the scenes at CNN in the first place?

Anyone know if this is being screened again - I'd love to see it?

No, they're not psychic! I said that it was the first plane, not them! I know because it's two years ago and I can remember it happening!

It seemed quite genuine to me. It wasn't film of the newsroom all normal and then someone saying, "Oh look a plane has hit". It seemed to be film of the newsroom a good while after the plane hit, someone had obviously just picked up a camera and started filming. They were at the stage of just realising it was a 767 which had hit, not a Cessna type.

I remember the BBC Choice thing last year where they re-ran the News 24 coverage. From what I can remember wasn't it John Terret in the middle of Business Today (or whatever) when he said something along the lines of, "Oh, we're getting some interesting pictures in at the moment, and it seems like there is a fire at the World Trade Centre..." as cool as you like.

After a few minutes he handed over to the news presenters. Can anyone remember who they were? What stage did a BBC One presenter join in and who was it?

I saw that too. I thought he was tremendous, and as he was familiar with the buildings and the area, he filled the air time with information about the size of the buildings, the previous attempted attack and so on. The two who followed werent nearly as smooth, although bless them, who could have stayed calm during all that followed?

On News 24, I think John Terrett returned to Valerie Sanderson and John Nicolson who were the duty anchors that afternoon. BBC 1 then went straight to them after Neighbours (though I think they may have interuppted it half way through for an Anna Ford news report???). Those two were on air till about 3.30/4 when Jane Hill and Peter Dobbie (who was covering for Matthew Amroliwala that day) took over. Gavin Esler then took over from Peter at about 5. Huw then came on with the 6 o'clock news till 6.35, and it was back to Jane/Gavin. Huw replaced Gavin at about 7 to take it upto Eastenders at 7.30. News 24 then switched over to BBC2 and Gavin and Carrie Gracie. After an interuption for a David Dimbleby special, Gavin and Carrie came back before Peter Sissons did the 10 o'clock news. Peter Dobbie then took over again in the late night with Carrie, and then overnight we were treated to Bill Turnbull and I thnk it was Deborah McKenzie before Jeremy Bowen and Sophie Raworth did a special Breakfast the next day. Simple as that really. Wink

If anyone's interested in the happenings on BBC World that afternoon - The morning was pretty usual - Martine Dennis on the European Breakfast shift, followed by Stephen Cole. Nisha Pillai took over at noon, and they were in Sport Today with Rob Bonnet when the news broke. It happened quite near the end of Sport Today, and Rob just handed back to Nisha for some breaking news. At that point, Nisha just said that there were strange pictures coming in from New York, depicting the WTC on fire. They returned to Sport Today, and it was when the news came on at 1400 that they confirmed a plane had hit. Nisha continued (and missed the second plane hitting the South Tower, IIRC) until about 1500, when Nik Gowing took over a little early. He stayed until the David Dimbleby programme was on, and then it was Philip Hayton until 0100, before joining up with Bill Turnbull and Heather McCarthy overnight.
