I've just seen this thread, about 20 mins ago (during Bob M on Bob M), all analogue was off here in North Bristol / South Glous. It all came back about 10 secs later, but ITV wasn't locked properly until about 30 secs after that.

I lost half of TOTP2, & I couldn't tape via satelite because we were watching/taping 'Most Haunted' !

Anyone know exactly how long the transmitter was off ?

Don't know if NTL cable went down but at 10 new years eve Telewest blacked out on a error code 16 which has something to do with transmission, but yet is where i live in southyorkshire the local relays and the main transmitter at emley moor was transmitting ok.
Where do telewest get their feeds from as this affected every station not just the main 5.

I would have thought they would have had more that one main centre to reduce disruption, then again though its alright doing this but what about those were unable to access to net to see this info they will never know whats going off, my dad is threatening to pull the cable out because of this.

And a third one:

Any particularly good reason why Channel 5 in this area comes from Lichfield and not Sutton Coldfield? Is Litchfield a relay or SC backup or what?

It's because Channel 5 awarded it's complete transmission contract to NTL and their ere no rules about co-siting sites with the other channels. Lichfield is a former ITV site, therefore now owned by NTL so they used that, same for Croydon.

According to http://www.meldrum.co.uk/mhp/features/405death.html Litchfield was the second ITA transmitter after Crystal Palace. I presume then that after the IBA was dissolved, the ownership of the transmitters passed to NTL?

Mind you, Sutton's done well for itself: - http://tx.mb21.co.uk/gallery/suttoncoldfield/index.asp - the first non London transmitter, the last transmitter to lose 405 transmissions...

I set my video to tape TOTP2 and Red Dwarf on NYE as we were all next door where their cable died (except for BBC1, 2, ITV1, 4, BBC3 and BBC News 24 which all kept freezing up occasionally - this went on well past midnight).

We tried to watch on analogue instead and couldn't get anything but they assumed their loft aerial was unplugged (I don't know if it was; they gave up looking through the electrical spaghetti after a minute or so and I don't know which way their aerial points).

Anyway I got home to find Red Dwarf had taped fine - that doesn't necessarily prove that SC was back on though, as we get our signal from the Wrekin, which in digital terms is is a relay of SC, but I'm not sure about Analogue. I didn't watch my recording of TOTP2 since I'd watched most of it on next door's dodgy cable. It's since been taped over.

Digital may well have stayed on at SC - it needs far less power so can be sustained by a generator

If there's roughly half an hour blank, I can probably fill the gap partly with a couple of this week's 15 minute editions !(why 15 mins, Peters ?)

I really need to buy a second video & try to do some editing of my videos at some point !
