CBBC's "SMart" rewound on air this afternoon. Right back past the VT clock to colour bars. Excellent.

Not quite.

It cut to colour bars (which included the logo of a Soho post production house) and then fast forwarded to a VT clock.

I don't think that these were the bars and clock from Smart, I suspect that when it was being dubbed onto server someone changed the tape machine to another.... and no-one noticed

Not really pres but a bizarre party political broadcast on Five at the moment! It has certain words bleeped out or wind effects added instead and some of the pictures have been removed. A caption came up a couple of times saying "Channel 5 have demanded so many changes..." The PPB made absolutely no sense!

And nice to know BBC One haven't learnt from their earlier mistake this afternoon of squeezing the credits of Neighbours when they were already shifted to the right and the sound levels seemed to be all over the place during that junction too. There, I've finished now. Very Happy

Five refused to show the BNP PEB in the form it was delivered. The BNP delivered different versions to all broadcasters (even to the extent of showing different ones on BBC TWO and BBC TWO Wales). As far as I know, all broadcasters made at least some edits, as one of the main points of the PEB seemed to be to criticise the broadcaster showing it.

With regards to seeing programmes start rewinding on air, I've noticed they sometimes cut straight from this back to the action where it was before rewinding. Just wondering how that is possible - could it be that more that one 'VTR' is playing the show, at the same playout station or even remotely?

It's often played from servers these days so I guess recueing is a lot easier

Speaking of this, has anyone got any videos of the BNP PEB that C5 refused to show?

I'm not a racist or anything, I just want to see it. Smile

I'm wondering if they're played off servers then how can they rewind on air?

well it didn't look like a tape style rewind to me - looked like it was a change of frame every few seconds in the SMART incident

Programmes are often played from server with a tape copy running as a back-up.

I remember once looking after the transmission of a documentary that had a long sequence of HM Queen talking. This qualified it - in those days - as a Grade 1 broadcast, so extra precautions had to be taken. We were transmitting it off 1 inch C format VT, with the original film print running in sync from a Telecine suite at Lime Grove (that dates it!!!) as a first backup, and a second VT copy rolling as well. We were running BBC1 from NC1 at TVC, with NC3 staffed up (just along the corridor) just in case NC1 should fail. All went well.

It's all a bit different now. Razz

But as I mentioned earlier I'm pretty sure that the rewinding/fast-forwarding on the episode of Smart wasn't Smart, it was another tape of something else interrupting the programme either live or when it was dubbed to server the day before

BBC Scotland had a trailer for a BBC TWO programme, with the orangey-red BBC ONE closing effect but with a purple BBC TWO logo.
