Andrew Marr would probably be cancelled.

Surely if anything Royal related were to happen it would be prepared for a few hours before and stay embargoed until a certain time? I expect both ITV and the BBC would get their 'senior' newscaster in as quickly as possible.

That's assuming it's an expected or 'passed away quietly in the night' death. As we saw with Diana, this isn't necessarily always the case.

Although as it was the middle of the night the BBC had a fair number of hours to get prepared before most people woke up and saw the news. Like you say, if it's unexpected and it's the middle of the day I guess it's whoever is there.

Does anybody know what the most recent case of embargoed news was? I saw the death of Bin Laden mentioned earlier in the thread.

News is embargoed on a daily basis.

The radio listening figures is the classic, which can't be announced until 7am.

The Rajar embargo ends at midnight on the day the data is released to radio stations.

Quite regularly got embargoed press releases from a local council for a hyperlocal news website I ran until recently. Usually it's for a campaign they're launching on a particular day but offers broadcast media an interview opportunity in advance.

In Cambridge we've had a range of embargos from local authorities over recent years, but only for big events such as the date of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's visit to the city in 2012, the date of the Queen's visit in 2013 and stage 3 of Le Tour de France's annoucement. More frequently there are ones for acts appearing at the annual Cambridge Folk Festival.

In the national news, I think there is quite a variety of news is which is embargoed until a certain time. When stores issue their quarterly results in the morning, I suspect that was embargoed as news teams are usually already at the store reporting on it. Copies of the Budget are also available before the chancellor speaks. I guess there are numerous things embargoed.

RAJAR used to be 7am - it's now midnight. Subscribers get the figures at 10:30am the previous day, but MediaGuardian, RadioToday etc. can't report on them until that midnight deadline - hence bang on 12 you'll see RadioToday publish a bevvy of articles complete with soundbites from programme management etc. - the reality is they'll have been typed up ready to go for a few hours before.

I also remember when Chris Moyles' replacement on Radio 1 breakfast was embargoed from being identified until 10:30am when Ben Cooper was going to announce the news on-air as part of Newsbeat. In reality I remember someone breaking the embargo about 10 minutes before.

Re. the Moyles story, apparently Ben Cooper got Chris Moyles in a meeting room just after his show on Tuesday 10th July (the day before Moyles announced that he was leaving) and told him that they were going to announce on Newsbeat in a matter of hours (i.e. before his show the following day) that he was leaving and Nick Grimshaw was taking over. There then followed an almighty ruckus, with Moyles' agent getting very angry with Ben Cooper about how inappropriate this was, and eventually (after much haggling) it was agreed that the announcement would be delayed by 24 hours, allowing Moyles to announce his departure on-air himself the following morning (11th July). Amusingly, Cooper had assumed that the Moyles meeting wouldn't take long, so had invited all the Moyles on-air team (Dave, Aled, etc) into another meeting room for half-an-hour later. As they were waiting for Cooper, Nick Grimshaw stuck his head round the door and said, "has anyone seen Ben Cooper, I'm supposed to be having a meeting with him but I've no idea what about." To which Comedy Dave replied, "I think I can guess".

That's all according to the interview that Moyles gave to Stephen Nolan last year.

Another example of a high-profiled embargoed story was that Clarkson was leaving the BBC last year. It was a 2pm embargo, with Five Live trailing that 'an announcement was coming' and bang-on 2pm, the main headline across all BBC bulletins was that Clarkson had not had his contract renewed. The story was 'leaked' by the Telegraph the previous evening, as they predicted with utter certainty what was going to be announced the following day.
