I just happened to be watching FOX News when the news broke. After the reporting the story the went straight pictures of the smoke.

At this time no other news channel was reporting about the crash.

As soon as the current story finished on Sky News they started reporting it showing FOX News and just after this it was reported on CNNI.

BBC News 24 were showing weather when it broke and then another story and did not report the story until about 3-5 mins after Sky News.

ITN News did not seem to mention it until at least 15 mins after Sky/Fox.

So another First for Sky News.

Maybe someone is interested... The Swedish equivalent of the BBC, Swedish Television (SVT), took live coverage from BBC World right after the news of the plane crash broke. It was broadcast both on terrestial tv and on digital news channel SVT24 before leaving for their own coverage.
Apparently a deal was struck after the sept 11 attacks. According to the agreement the SVT can't show just short parts of the BBC broadcasts, like one or two minutes. It has to be more than that.
In Sweden the main commercial competitor to public service SVT, TV4, has the exculsive rights for CNN-coverage which prooved very helpful for that channel on sept 11.
That was why SVT struck the deal with BBC. A cheap deal, according to the SVT head of news, when it's between two public service broadcasters.

I appreciate the information. I'm always curious about what other countries do and the various agreements different networks have. And don't worry, hardly any one responds to my posting on the happenings of American tv. Oh well.

Thing is, would we have known that September 11th was terrorism if the second plane hadn't gone in?

Yes of course, it was hijacked and they were known to be hijacked before they crashed

i was half expecting bbc 2 to join bbc 1, n24, world and america, as they were all talking about the same thing - but we got jane hill instead

i was on ceefax around 2.30 this afternoon, and thought it was a mistake (like a preprepared page - as they have for the death of the queen mother) as there was nothing on tv about it.

but low and behold itn was first on-air, followed by bbc 1 then ch4, then ch5.  how inconsistant can itv's generic ident get? - not very proffesional are they, in september a disfigured ident on black, yesterday a huge ident on white???? tut

anyway - just thought id mention how ceefax had the story at least 10 minutes before bbc1/itv

Did anyone see Philipa Young reporting for Sky News Live from New York with the Fox News microphone in her hand?

Just in case anyone's interested, here's what French TV were doing. I switched on at about 6pm (5pm your time) and both TF1 and France 2 (the 2 main channels in terms of news) were showing live coverage, and I got the impression that they'd been doing it all afternoon. They both broke off around 6.30/45 to show regular programming, but then came back for extended main bulletins at 8pm (both show their main news at 8 over here) - France 2 actually started theirs about 10 mins early too. France 2 also showed a 10min 'flash' at 10.30 to update events.

I was pretty impressed - lots of live reports and analysis from both. TF1 is generally considered the best in terms of news (their presenters are HUGE over here), but France 2 seemed to have more coverage.
