ITV News first on the air at 2.40 (terrestrial) mid-way during the first half of Wheel of Fortune, cutting off with a white screen with the large ITV1 logo upon it.
BBC1 joins BBC World five minutes later. The plane came from Boston airport.

ITV1 News extremely informative with linking between a flight expert, Mark Austen in the newsroom, and Larence McGinty in the studio, and linking often to a live speech from Tony Blair and CNN.
BBC also linking to Jane Stanley in New York. Simultaneous broadcast on BBC1, News 24, and World. Its a crazy world.
Originally thought to be a flight just about to land (therefore no terrorism suspected), however, now seems that it had (just) took off from Boston/JFK (going to Dominican rep)- but no-one suspects terrorism.
255 on the flight apparently.
Thing is, would we have known that September 11th was terrorism if the second plane hadn't gone in?

Yeah how bad, I was watching Wheel Of Fortune then they just cut it off
First the sound went, then the screen flickered and went black for a few seconds
Then a Huge ITV1 logo came on
'And now we go over to the ITN newsroom
Their was mis-use of widescreen, Dermot looked really big
Then finally the BBC One caught on about 2-4 mins later
It was just leaving JFK airport, it must have been full of fuel
4 buildings are belived to be on fire

Jet crashes in Queens, NY
Terrorism has been ruled out after American Airlines flight 587 has crashed in Queens, New York, after take off from JFK airport. It has been reported that 246 people are on board the plane and up to four buildings are said to be on fire.

I think its best not to think about that.
As Sam said, ITV1 did break the news first on terrestrial, I wondered what was happening, as i just came downstairs and it faded to black, then there was sort of lines where they insert the trailer thingy on top of the credits, then it faded again to that logo, with our usual announcer speaking, so I assume the whole network got the London announcer.
Nothing has been confirmed to say it's terroists though.
