Mike Neville.. I see thats why he's won so many awards then.. for being dull and boring. Always a joke and a good laugh, which is why Tyne Tees is one of the few stations to keep the weatherman "in studio" so the banter can continue.

The views from "the windows" are fake, but a head of Look North in as much as its not a camera on the top of a block of flats in Gateshead - the few from the TTTV 'windows' is the view from the canteen at City Road. Carol Malia was much better on Tyne Tees Weekend.

It was the programme (ie; the whole effort from reporters, producers and presenter) that got the 2 recent RTS awards...the programme isn't just one man....despite what some think!

I'm sorry...I don't find the banter at the end of show very funny.

However youre right about Ms Mailia....much better on Tyne Tees...less like a school teacher!

Yes but he's won a few too. Of course I think he was better on his own chat show which he did for Tyne Tees, he has that ability to if everything goes wrong to just say "oh well" where as some of these new "younger trendy" news presenters just freeze up, look like stunned rabbits and then mutter some terrible ad-lib.

I think Mike Neville was the only regional news presenter to be Gotcha oscar-ed by Noel Edmonds, and I think he got that lifetime achivement award for being the longest serving continuous newsreader didn't he? So I think he does something right.

Of course people over 30 may remember him from Nationwide.

I think the news will change, and maybe its cosy at Tyne Tees, Paul Frost and Bill Steel were both of the "cosy" style of presenting but for some reason Mr Neville seems to have something more, maybe he's just liked because he is what you see.

I'd like to see Mike Neville still make programmes even if he leaves the news, he is talented and we've seen far too many age-related changes that haven't worked in the past. Roy Walker for example being ditched from Catchphrase.

I think looking at Tyne Tees Today / Northern Life it is fair to say that he has brought more viewers to TTTV, more so than any of those programmes ever did.

Mike always looks bored when they go back to him at 6.50. (I know it's probably recorded)

That's not quite true. During the Northern Life days when the show was very down market it did beat the BBC.
However as I said earlier Tyne Tees are starting to lose the ratings war-the BBC's advantage is that they have national news first and then local which most people prefer according to research and audience patterns elsewhere.
Tyne Tees only had an advantage when they were head to head with Look North during the old hour long North East Tonight days (when it used to run fro six until seven).
Now that the BBC North East is available on Sky they have caught up with a 30 per cent share some nights when TTTV trail with 21/22.
If Mike was such a pull he'd beat them surely?

I don't deny he was great in his prime and yes he has won awards BUT he is now looking and sounding his age and I reckon its time TTTV thought about putting someone else in his place.

I think if he went they'd get less viewers so he is a bit of a pull. It always was better to have the news at 5:40 then the regional news, but of course they can't do that with the news at 10:30 situation, although I doubt shortly whether the regulator will care where the news is.

Maybe Mr Neville should do more of an "Afternoon Show" style programme like Granada have. Or even better the old Tyne Tees Weekend formular was a popular programme - only ditched because Yorkshire TV decided we needed 75 minutes of frightful Whiteley. If it was left to BBC North there would be hardly any regional programmes, Tyne Tees have always done more for the region, and I hope it stays like that.

Tyne Tees Head of News himself admitted that North East Tonight was bady effected when they first messed around with the news. The hour long show was really Mike's baby and featured a better mix of stories and features - and more local opt outs. It's a pale shadow of the show which won an RTS award in it's first year. I don't think they've ever got over the cut in half as it seems to have the pace of the hour long programme but only 25 minutes to do it in.

Look North have picked up their game, most notably copying Tyne Tees of a daily indepth sports report, previously they would only do it on a Monday and Friday.

It was at its best when it was an hour 6-7, but the hour from 5:30-6:30 was the start of the problem, having the light news first then the serious stuff, it just didn't work, maybe because it was so unusual. Having three sets of opening titles in one hour and a programme within a programme was also a big mistake.

Northern Life/Tyne Tees Today always seemed to fit more into the programme and it even had a break at 6:15, so there is a problem with the style of the programme, however its warmer than Look North and Mike doesn't walk around all over the pace in leather pants trying to look sexy. - Thank goodness.

Thank God! Wonder when the directive will come down from ITV News Division that Mr Neville has to get up and walk around a bit...and what he will then tell them to do.

Judging from the sound of him I don't think he could walk around...poor soul sounds like he is on his last legs!
So if we had to choose a replacement for Mike Nev who would it be? Someone from TTTV or from outside?

now, now, leave poor Mike alone. He's actually younger than he looks.

When Mike retires I think they need to bring back double headers...my vote is for Sarah Gatenby and Johnathan Morrell (please not Pam Royal)
