Bewitched, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, That 70's Show, God, The Devil & Bob, I Dream Of Jeannie, American Dad, King Of The Hill, South Park

I like all those, but the list does really end then. but my UK 'comedy' shows list would be 20 times as long as that

Does anyone else remember Chateauvallon? It was a kind of upper-class French soap - a bit like France's answer to Dallas. Channel 4 showed it for a while in the 80s. IIRC, it was shown dubbed, but with an omnibus repeat with just subtitles.

It never really caught on. I just think most of the public aren't prepared to make the effort with subtitles, and just don't like dubbing. With such a wealth of programmes made in English from around the world, it's just not something we've felt we have to get used to.

I remember it and I loved it! (Actually helped with my school French...) There was also Schwarzwald Klinik on C4 ISTR (which was dubbed or subbed from German - can't remember which)

Does anyone remember when Channel Four showed Brazilian telenovelas (kind of soaps that ran for a couple of months) like Dancin' Days on Saturday late-morning/early afternoon? ISTR they were subtitled mainly.

Also - if you are restricting stuff to the US/Aus/UK there have been quite a few kids shows from NZ, A Country GP was also from NZ, and there have been quite a few shows from Canada (Degrassi? Due South etc.)

Yes, a good deal of quality stuff comes from Canada and NZ, just have to look. Besides, there's a few good comedy series from the US, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld and Arrested Development to name 3.

You have to remember how the bible belt in the US rules over most TV output so entertainment is generally sanitised to the lowest common denominator.

BBC4 show that German war drama all the time - something like Heimat I think.

As the BBC shewed the original series on BBC-2, will the remake be getting broadcast on BBC-4?

BBC1 had a dubbed Norweigan (I think) childrens drama once. Something about growing pineapples in the fjords or something. I don't remember it being very good. It was during the Andi Peters/broomcupboard era.

A Country GP...if you mean A Country Practice, that's an Australian show as well...

For some reason that's just reminded me of the wonderful Heidi which seemed to be shown virtually every year during the summer holidays when I was a kid. IIRC it was originally in German, but dubbed into English.

Then there was Silas, which I don't remember quite so much about, but I think that was also badly dubbed.

Patrick Pacard -- it was German but set in Norway.

I remember for the last episode Andi and Edd sang the theme tune -- it had reached a cult status of crapness.

The theme was played at least five times during each episode -- it still haunts me to this day.

No - I mean a Country GP - an NZ series following the life and work of a "Country GP" - in the 50s I think. I remember the lead actor was Lani Tupu - an NZ Maori actor who then popped up quite a few years later in Farscape.

Yep - Heimat is a long-running German TV series tracing the lives of various German families through the last century. It has been recently updated. It is a bit like the dramatic equivalent of 7-49Up - in German.

Oh there were loads of dubbed imported EuroKid dramas in the 70s and 80s.

Silas, Heidi, Oscar Kina and the Laser, Patrick Pacard etc. Plus loads of the cartoons shown like Ulysses 31, Willy Fog, Mysterious Cities of Gold etc. were originally made for the Spanish or French markets, just as shows like Space Sentinels and G-Force were made for the Japanese market. Easier to dub cartoons though!
