Yes. Record the first trip, play it in while the car goes round the second time. Then when the car has gone back cut to a live camera and bring the car back.

Yep, note how they hold on a shot of Noel looking to the right for a while, they wait on that while 'clean' Jenny is moved into the end position. Judging by her reaction it looks like she didn't know she was gong to get a second gunging.... presumably she'd just spent quite a lot of time getting cleaned up from the pre-recorded first one.

I'd be interested to find out how that whole train thing worked, presumably there was an army of scene-shifters pulling pulleys and levers.

One thing that I always wondered is the logistics of those gungings (on House Party and elsewhere) - when it was a member of the public sometimes it was a set up so they were more prepared, but I seem to remember there were some occasions where it was seemingly random audience members. I know they paid for replacement clothes when necessary but did they just give them a dressing room and a dressing gown and then they had to sit around in the bar or greenroom while someone did their laundry so they could go home?

I do know (via another internet forum) that the gunge was always kept at just above room temperature right up to loading into the over head containers - because of it wasnt, when dropped on to the neck and back of said recipient, the cold mixture would make them naturally contract and tence up and cause possible whiplash style injuries.

Presumably they had to be quite careful over the electrics and the like in that part of the studio with that much liquid floating around.

These things are always more complicated than they look. There's a health and safety training clip of Dr Who with Sophie Aldred inside a filling tank of water - so many factors, not only the fact the actress could drown or freeze but there's glass and water and electrics....

You missed out the interesting bit, and the whole reason it's in a health and safety package - the tank cracked and started to flood the studio floor, so Sylvester McCoy shouted up to the stage hands above (apparently throwing in some obscenities so no-one would mistake it for ad-libbing) to pull Sophie Aldred out. Opinions differ as to who was in what danger, but suffice it to say it did no go to plan and would not bear repeating.

I think some footage (Ace disappearing upwards) made it into the final edit. Makes sense, really, as they wouldn't have gone for another take after that.

I'm sure plenty of people know about Lucille Ball nearly drowning during a shower scene on The lucy Show back in the 60s. Only in that case nobody but her co-star was even aware she was in trouble, and it made it into the show.

Yes, (sorry I did pass that part of the course!) the main danger was the broken glass in the tank which the water was pulling her towards. The fault was that they hadn't taken into account the weight of the water and the strength of the glass. I seem to remember Game for a Laugh doing similar things with big vertical tanks years before the Dr Who incident.

You can also see the clock above the fireplace in the initial gunging has a much earlier time on it!

Re: gunging members of the audience - I imagine a lot of watches and glasses must have needed replacing over the years, although this was largely pre-pocket mobile phones though.

There's also his very close encounter with some pyros blowing up a tent that went off a lot sooner (closer to Silvester) than planned, he flinches but finishes the scene!

There's a scene in The Young Ones where an oven explodes behind Rick, and the explosion was far bigger than anticipated, which led to Rik Mayall genuinely recoiling as he realises he was inches from potential death. They didn't just leave the shot in, but they played it in slow motion to allow the shot to last for as long as possible.

Funny to think this thread started because Noel Edmonds dressed up as a woman.

There was an explosion in Star Trek that apparently left William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy with tinnitus. And Burt Ward apparently had to go to hospital because of an explosion in the 60s Batman. So it's not unique to over here!

Plus the Anthea Turner incident on an UP2U OB getting too close to a pyro effect
