I remember that bit like it was yesterday, funny how quickly Blobby in the show changed from a costume to a character given as recently as March that year you had this... (3:32 in)

What's strange is that the head on the costume that Noel wore and Tony in that above example had hinges and seemed slightly more secure. The only time there were issues was with the Lizzie Webb gotcha where the head kept on coming loose nearly revealing Noel, but he was made to be very energetic then.

The head just seems to pop completely off as soon as Blobby falls through the door in that previous example. With this happening so early in the time where the show decided to develop him into a real character due to his popularity, they must have been panicking that their plan was now a complete failure.

If you fancy scaring your core audience on a children's show then you can't do no wrong with this Mr Blobby mishap!

Noel says during his BBC work he had 50 episodes a year. If you add NHP, xmas presents and telly addicts you get 38... what is the other 12?

Was this prank/joke a regular thing? Going by the caption at the beginning it looks like it was except this time they made him sing the whole song.

Yes I think it had been a running joke in early 1993 that he either started songs in a dream sequence or got interrupted. I think Noel also had a thing about singing - either he didn't like it, or found it embarrassing, which is why so many of the surprises involved it (series 3 had Tom Jones, series 4 You're The One That I Want with Vicki Michelle and series 6 had the Spice Girls).

I love that video, especially the way he gets horrified every time he sees there's more cue cards.

Looks like the people in the gallery that morning had no idea what was going off!

The person who played Mr Blobby appeared in a Deal or No Deal sketch on Dead Ringers, getting a cup of coffee poured on his head. An in joke I guess for people who knew who he was!

Barry did a load of House Party stuff outside of the Blobby outfit too. As well as other Gotcha appearances, he was Noel's brother Liam in series 6 (presumably created as they "rested" Blobby that year, putting him on Live and Kicking instead, before inevitably bringing him back later in the run) and appeared as himself with Noel in the final two series during My Little Friend.

As mentioned the song was a running 'gag' throughout the series. The prank itself however is similar to what happened at the end of the 1983 series of The Late Late Breakfast Show:

I remember after that as a kid always watching past the end of the last episode expecting them to surprise him at the end of a series, but of course it's not something they did again.

Talking of pranking Noel, I just stumbled across this. It's obviously a reference to famous prank he played on his Radio 1 show where he pretended to a telephone engineer, but it still doesn't make much sense, doesn't look like Noel understood it either
