I agree, ITV need to think about getting the rights to show some imported series. They used to show a lot of american and aussie shows but now almost everything is home grown.
Be careful with that argument - that could actually be the one admirable aspect of ITV's programming.

It would admirable if the programmes were of decent quality. The only thing ITV can be proud of late is its drama output.
so why haven't they been in the fray for popular, easily marketed series such as.... Desperate Housewives, ?
ITV revealed earlier this year they were on the verge of buying Desperate Housewives, but, in their immense wisdom decided not to. The reason why is because the bidding became too expensive, and ITV didnt want to pay a huge amount for the series which they intended to air in DAYTIME! How stupid are these people for even considering airing the series in daytime?! Imagine the cuts and edits that would have had to taken place, not to mention the relatively small audience who would be able to see it. This was a golden opportunity for ITV to have a fantastic contemporary drama in peaktime, and to help remove their downmarket 'chav' perception, but they squandoured their chances.
I'm not surprised. British broadcasters have often thrown away prime time US shows in daytime or late at night. Third watch on channel 4 would be the best example.
I cant remember the last time BBC1 or ITV put an imported programme on primetime. I suppose they would get a lot of stick about not supporting original home grown programming if they did but if the show was good enough and they didn't do it all the time then why not? Desperate housewives ratings would probably have doubled if it had been on the same timeslot on ITV. Why do so many people have some aversion to watching BBC2 or Channel 4?

Thats such a damn shame!
And Desperate Housewives is such a top quality drama, I would prefer it on 4 though.
(It gets 20 million viewers in the US, and the new series will be back in September. )
Well, they wheeled out Denis again tonight in replacement for Fat Families (or whatever it was). I remember a time when It'll Be Alright On the Night was a rare occasion. Now it seems whenever ITV haven't got some reality TV show or Football they pollute our screens with this or Tv's Naugtiest Blunders 68 with Neil 'I'm not reading a script' Morrissey!

They didn't learn from the mistakes they made with Home & Away then, clearly...
AFAIK Desperate Housewives airs in the afternoon in many countries. When you think about it, it's not *that* bad in terms of content unsuitable for daytime broadcast.

Over in the US, they air it at 9pm. (Pacific Time)

i personally think he hasn't got a clue what the viewwers want drama wise, he recomissoons rubbish and well the good stuff is axed

Annabel Croft has criticised ITV's handling of Celebrity Wrestling. In an interview for Teletext, she claims it was always going to be difficult up against Doctor Who but use of the word "Celebrity" put a lot of viewers off (the working title was "Combat"). She was also critical of what she describes as "page 3 marketing" and the original idea was more concerned with wrestling techniques.
But she's not sorry she did it; it was the most physically demanding show she'd ever done. Not the first time ITV has given Annabel a raw deal - remember Interceptor?

Which like Celebrity Wrestling was axed after one series, and the final episode being shown on the morning of New Years Day 1990.
