I know I am going to be seriously slaughtered for posting this, but it's worth a shot I suppose. For my GCSE Media Studies I am studying Children's TV, in particular Nickelodeon. Now, I don't have digital TV so I don't have a clue about how it even looks, so I am begging you, please can people maybe explain to me anything they know about Nickelodeon in terms of the company international and its presentation, maybe with some caps??
It would really help me and I need all the help I can get really!
Thanks again,
yellow.

Okay then, Nickelodeon is a childrens channel that was part of the MTV Networks, which eventually became part of Viacom. In the UK the channel launched in September 1993, Nick at Nite like it's US counterpart (a showcase for showing really old US programming) launched a year or two after, but closed shortly, though eventually it was replaced by Paramount Comedy.

In 1999 Nick took full advantage in the UK to launch new channels on Digital, daytime segment Nick Junior became it's own channel, Nick Replay was also born, and Nick itself changed it's broadcasting hours to 6.00am-10.00pm daily, on Digital, where as on Analogue it still only broadcasts until 7.00pm. In 2002 they launched another channel called Nick Toons TV, now known simply as Nicktoons.

In recent years it has relied on endless repeats of Sabrina The Teenage Witch and Saved By The Bell to bring in the viewers, but these programmes have gradually been dropped from the Nick schedules, as the ratings are starting to decline thanks to new channels such as CBBC.

Nicktoons also started as a sort of segment of Nickelodeon. It bought us such gems as Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Rockos Modern Life, Doug, Real Monsters and more. Everytime one of these programs came on, it was proceeded by a Nicktoons frontcap in the early years of Nick UK, which i still have a clip of, albeit a bit chopped because the poor video quality, but here we go, this example being from 1994:

Also, ever since Nickelodeon started, their theme has centred around the colour orange. From the first nickelodeon ident I remember to todays presentation, the logo has always been orange and the ident itself contains a lot of orange. Today the idents are completely orange. The logo font itself has not changed at all since it's launch.

Here is a clip from the same period as the above clip showing the bumper that came up just after a program had hit a break:

Notice the orange in both clips, still what they use today.

Hope this helps.

My serious advice to you would be to study something you have easier access to.

Obviously with children's TV you have to consider the specialist childrens channels such as Nickelodeon - but if your centering your project on one service I'd suggest either CBBC or CITV as you have access to them - and examine how digital channels have had an impact on them.

CITV especially would be a good idea as OFCOM in the last couple of days have allowed ITV to cut 1/3 of it's kids programming - so there are probably a few articles around.

Well Nick wouldn't have been my first choice, but it has been given to us by our teacher. Everyone has to use it as an industry example or something, which is understandable because of its complex history. Thanks for the info by the way; it'll be a great start for my homework.

One last thing, the main part of this module is to make a real tralier for a made-up programme. So what do these trailers look like? Are they in a different style for each channel?

Thanks again for all your comments! Keep 'em coming!

Each trailer's different for each channel. Though I'm sure that Nick Toon's now uses something similar to nick now.

I'll try and get some caps of Nick looks at the moment tomorrow, but with a quick mock up, the Nickelodeon trailers all end similar to this...

And Mr Stabby, that Nick Toon's cap looks better than the stuff we have now, clever use of the nick logo rather than plonking it on orange. Though some of the current idents are cleverly thought out rather than the ones when this style was first introduced.

I don't like Nick's presentation as much now. I used to like how it was a different DOG everyday rather than just the same, boring logo. What is with tv channels and replacing decent idents and turning them into 1! BBC Two comes to mind...

Yep. The dog currently isn't that nice at all.
At least before it did change, and the splat was like the true nick splat, orange and 3D lit, rather than a flat starfish.

I also liked the last package as things were allowed to be colourful and unique, yet all were linked with the Nickelodeon orange logo, rather than the whole package being orange.

This is an excellent website for logos by the way. Although, some are quite old.

Wow, I remember that one! It was still being used as late as 1999, when the idents featured dancing kids (which were replaced with those outer space type ones).

Does anynoe have any more early 1994 screen grabs of the Nickelodeon DOGs like the one in the two video clips posted above?

Yeah so do I. I never liked the music in it. Thought it was too cheesy!
