Could there be a Nick Jr. Block on Channel 5?

A replacement for Milkshake! (April 2019)

Hi all,

As Viacom owns Channel 5, it doesn’t seem cost effective to have two Children’s brands.

It would make more sense for Viacom to have a Nick Jr. block on Channel 5, every morning from 6am - 9:15am.

Thoughts?

What do you "now owns" Channel 5? They've owned it since May 2014!

as to not being "cost effective to have two children's brands", can I refer the honourable gentleman to the Turner owned channels, because they have Cartoon Network and Boomerang as two entirely different brands and they seem able to cope.

Milkshake! is a strong brand for Channel 5 - plus the Nick Jr audience is pay, whereas Milkshake! on Channel 5 is more universal on Free TV.

Why don't Channel 5 air more programmes for the older kids after Milkshake! finishes on the weekends? (e.g. SpongeBob, The Loud House, Henry Danger, Game Shakers etc.) All they seem to show are Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles though they have aired TMNT 2012, SpongeBob and The Fairly OddParents in the past.

Even back in the days when Channel 5 was new to the scene it decided it didn't want to play with the likes of CBBC and CITV in their respective post 3:30pm slots, preferring instead to wheel out no end of copious TV films of spurious quality, as most of them are. Presumably they got a job lot and a regular rotation of "new" films, each batch as dire as the last.

When Channel 5 did air stuff for older children it used to be dumped on the weekends and was primarily aimed at teenagers. The Tribe was quite successful for them, though most of their other home grown stuff for the same market was cheap and cheerful (aka crap). But offerings between pre school and teenage were available, just not as wide on a scale as the BBC and ITV were offering and I dare say a lot of it was imported anyway.

Have to admit, I’m surprised they never jumped in the 3.30-5pm gap vacated by BBC1 and ITV.

I remember Harry and Cosh being quite popular for a while.

Are the kids audience there to watch a mainstream channel, they will either watch a kids channel, stream programmes or watch YouTube to get their TV viewing.
They did revive the shake brand teaming up with disney channel for a while and also nick for another block of time, maybe this didn’t catch on. Possibly because they dropped out of providing for older children, and were unable to pick them back up.

Going back down memory lane ‘The Core’ to me was a good brand which strangely seemed to become bigger with roadshows one summer before moving to a (albeit still small) larger studio with Marc Crumpton joining Kate McIntyre on presenting duties, after only a short while it was dwindled down and dropped as a strand to focus on the older kids (instead of children & teenagers) with milkshake fm, that became shake in the 2002 rebrand.

The market has obviously moved and if there was demand for a segment of programming along the lines of the old CBBC/CITV slots it would have happened by now, surely? The viewership is in favour of the specialised channels and their appropriate on-demands now and looking unlikely that it'll swing back in the other direction any time soon.

Saw the thread title and assumed there had been some big announcement and it was happening. Could be better named

Despite this, ITV did actually introduce a new programming strand on ITV Be called Little Be last year…

Viacom acquired Telefe (an Argentinian terrestrial channel) a couple of years back and quickly rebranded the early morning Kids block as Nick Jr.

In the case of C5/MIlkshake, the brand was already well established and Sky dislike their partners using Pay TV brands on free TV platforms (there was a "Nick Jr on TMF" slot a decade ago which later rebranded as Noggin).
