Was he still hosting Just a Minute then?

The last series was broadcast in February-March 2019 and they were due to record another in June-July but it was cancelled as he had a "bad back".

The summer series did go out over August - September. Giles stepped in for an Edinburgh episode where Nicholas had gone home early from the festival because of his back.

Yes, he was. They'll probably have Gyles Brandreth take over full time - he did four episodes over the last two years when Parsons was unavailable.

In 2018, Nicholas Parsons was unable to attend the recording of two editions of the programme as he had the flu. This broke his uninterrupted run of fifty years as a performer on the programme. The episodes were recorded on 1 April 2018 with Gyles Brandreth standing in for Parsons and were broadcast on 4 and 11 June 2018. He was also not present for a recording session for two episodes in series 85; episodes 942 and 943 were broadcast on 9 and 26 August 2019. Brandreth again covered for Parsons.

I often thought Nicholas would have made a good replacement for Richard Whiteley on Countdown after his death in 2005 (I can't believe that was 15 years ago).

Radio 4 are currently playing out a 50th anniversary edition of Just A Minute in which they have taken occasions when they have repeated subjects over the years and edited them together, so you get Kenneth Williams interrupting Stephen Fry. Wonderful stuff.

Preceded by a very touching tribute from Gyles Brandreth.

Just putting this out there - the Peel Wing and Wogan House seem to have set a precedent, the "Nicholas Parsons Radio Theatre" would seem very fitting.

I'm not sure I like the idea of having Brandreth present it full time, that said he wasn't actually that bad on the episodes he did present.

It will be him as I can't really think of anyone else who would be suitable, certainly no-one else from the regulars. They'll have been planning what to do when the inevitable happened and would have thought that Giles's filling in was part of that.

Although look what happened to ISIHAClue, the fill in for Humphs bad health didn't end up hosting full time

He must have been among the last - if not the last - TV entertainers from the 1950s still with us. What a career.

Depends how you want to define "TV entertainer".

Des O'Connor. English comedian, singer and television presenter, born 1932, still going strong. The butt of many jokes from Morecambe & Wise for supposed "singing" ability.

Patricia Routledge, esteemed actress in her own right but perhaps best known as "the Bucket woman" in Keeping Up Appearances amongst other things. 91 next month.
