Guys - a question for the Northern Ireland Jury ......... does the NI edition of Radio Times carry listings for RTE 1 & 2?

I haven't read the Radio Times lately. In most magazines we do, I think we get them where in Great Britain the listings for other regions would appear.

Do they carry listings in the regional variations for S4C, if so I might order it just out of interest.

S4C has regional variations? Or are you meaning that S4C is a regional variation from C4?

In the South/West/South West RT S4C listings are in the regional variations box... but then they were there too when it was the West/Wales edition before the shake up of the editions.

When i was in Cardiff the other day i looked at the Welsh RT and even there S4C was in the regional variations box with C4 in the main listings. Its quite odd, the programe titles are in Welsh and the narative in English!

S4C typhically is listed as a general "regional variation" in regions bordering Wales, but takes up most the column in Wales editions - though annoyingly in some mags it's squeezed into the C4 column.

Talking of RTE, what listing mags do they have in the Republic of Ireland, and can we have some scans please?

And as a wider issue, now the regions seem to be split only into England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, do you think it be a good idea for magazines to produce two versions for sale - one specialising in Freeview, with the other concentrating on Satellite and Cable.

We get the Radio Times and TV Times like you do (NI editions) and also several other UK listings magazines.

In terms of the indigenous publications: RTÉ publish the RTÉ Guide, though its turned into a bit of a lifestyles magazine rather than a listings magazine nowadays. There's a picture of the first issue here: http://www.rte.ie/laweb/brc/brc_1960s.html (it was called the RTV Guide prior to the renaming of Radio Éireann to RTÉ) and the current front page is here: http://www.rte.ie/arts/ . http://www.irish-tv.com also has scans of old issues. The RTÉ Guide, as its name suggests, had only RTÉ programme listings until UK listings magazine deregulation.

The competition is TV Now, thinner but more TV focused. The Irish Times and Irish Independent also include the weeks TV listings in their Saturday supplements, as does the Sunday Tribune.

One point to note: Irish TV listings magazines list in detail the four Irish channels, BBC Northern Ireland, UTV, and Channel 4. If Five is listed at all, it is typically in the "Regional Variations" column - or sometimes with the satellite listings - , alongside BBC Wales, ITV1 Wales (typically still captioned HTV) and S4C. Satellite listings tend to lead with Sky One.

On a slightly related topic . . . from Media Guardian. (18 Jan 06)

Quote:
The Radio Times is proposing to cut 20 jobs, almost half its listings department, and outsource its listings to the Press Association.
The BBC-owned magazine said a new deal to outsource part of its listings would mean losing around 20 of the 46-strong department.

It will invest the money saved in editorial content, marketing and the digital future of the magazine.

"This proposal is primarily designed to ensure that our listings not only continue to be unique, but also continue to improve," said Peter Phippen, the managing director of BBC Magazines.

"Protecting Radio Times' position in the premium market is paramount and the numbers of people we would retain on Radio Times would be significantly higher than those on any other listings magazine. This is not a cost-cutting exercise. It's a way of redistributing our resources so that we can reinvest in the title."

In a statement the Radio Times said it would retain a dedicated in-house listings team to proof pages and produce reviews, but that core listings information would be supplied by PA.

The magazine's circulation fell slightly in the first six months of last year following a price war at the lower end of the market.

A consultation process with staff and their union representatives began this week.

Who knows, might not be as many regional variations in the future.

The RTE guide is the largest selling magazine in Ireland.

I found this article on medialive.ie

The RTE Guide is Ireland's largest selling magazine with an ABC audited circulation figure of 104,455 copies weekly (audit period Jan-Jun 2005) and 257,000 female readers per issue (JNRS 2004/05).

The Irish Times had the following statement today about HTV listings

"The Irish Times can on longer list HTV programming ,as ITV PLC advise that certain ITV regional variations will only be made available to UK publications"

Probably in retaliation for calling it HTV so long Laughing

Seriously though, what exactly does ITV plc gain from banning the Irish Times from telling people what programmes are on at 5:30pm and what the name of ITV Wales regional news programme is? The only thing I can think of is that may be a demand from rights holders as a result of it going FTA, but as long as UTV is still providing their listings it's not very effective, is it...
