this is the one thing that annyos me about having widescreen tv.
Why can't BBC have a big grpahic on the sidebar???? It needn't say anything on it, but just an extention of the logo.

Please NickyS - why?

I agree. It's because every one at the BBC worries so much about making things look ok for those people watching in 14:9, they don't notice when the 16:9 picture looks stupid

I don't know the official reason/answer. But I do know it makes it easier for the cameramen/directors etc to know where the 4:3 cut off is.
On News 24 for example it's either side of the DOGs.
Roll on everyone having digital 16:9 TV's ..... okay that's probably a good 50 years away ...

I think they should to what Reporing Scotland do and use Plasma screens instead, that looks cool

Yes, I think Reporting Scotland done the right thing there. It makes a slight change, and it also suits the presentation.

I agree - the sidebar looks fine on their 14:9 mockup black-liney thing that NSE do (how's that for technical jargon!!).
The sidebar on the BBC ONE Nationals (1,6,10) looks awful in 14:9/16:9 too - It looks fine in 4:3, but in widescreen there is a harsh white line down the side followed by .. studio walls
I've said it before, I'll say it again: Come on MediaArc - get your act together!!
