Umm.. not quite that clear I'm afraid!
As I'm sure you know News 24 beat Sky for the 2nd time (in 4 years) the other week.
Sky are now back on top again.
To give the best example of a recent 'big' event..

'BARB figures indicate that Sky News's unrivalled coverage of events such as the Prescott fracas have helped increase its share in multichannel homes to 0.46% (from 0.44%). By contrast, the share of both BBC News 24 (0.32%) and the ITN news channel (0.07%) have fallen.

In Sky digital households, Sky News also maintained its share (0.84%) advantage over both channels with close to three times the share of BBC News 24, and around five times that of the ITN News Channel.'

'BARB figures indicate that in Sky digital households, Sky News' share, at 0.86, was around double that of BBC News 24 (0.44) for the first week of the campaign, and over five times that of the ITN News Channel (0.16). And in all multichannel homes - despite Sky News' potential audience being far smaller than BBC News 24's - it's share of viewing is still considerably higher.'

It really depends on what has happened.
The fuel crisis increased Sky's share by 300%, whereas News 24 only saw a very modest gain.

'The national fuel crisis has delivered a more than 300 per cent increase in viewing share to Sky News. The event has seen the channel attract its biggest audience since the war in Kosovo.

On Tuesday more than 2.5 million people tuned to Sky News in the UK alone. As a proportion of the audience, unofficial overnight figures indicate that Sky News averaged 2.98 per cent of viewers in all multichannel homes (peaking at 6.54 per cent in the afternoon).

In a competitive market, the channel took more than twice the share achieved by BBC News 24 (1.32 per cent) and more than 15 times that of the new ITN News Channel (1.32 per cent).'

Weekly viewing figures for both channels can be obtained from the BARB.

As I look at this weeks viewing figures News 24's highest audience was for ABC World News Tonight (!!), Sky's was for Sky News at Ten.
Sky's audience figure is also higher than News 24 for the past 2 weeks... although last week doesn't appear to have been a good week for news! Neither channel had an audience above 0.10 million.

I'm pretty sure the reason for ABC News Tonight being so highly rated is because its on at arount the time BBC1 joins News 24, so its possible audience is much larger.

No, those figures do not include BBC One figures - BARB have made sure of that to avoid any accusations of BBC corrupting figures - like the ones made in 1998.
If that were the case then News24 would be well ahead of Sky in the Uk - however, if we took Sky's viewing figures around the world into account, Sky would be miles ahead.

Really, wow, why is ABC news tonight so popular, I think its awful, but i've never watched much of it.

It's not popular - it's never been at the top before!
I do remember seeing a viewing figure for 'Your Call' on Sky having a 23% share of the audience!
Possibly because it was the 2.30am edition!!

It's normally 'BBC News' that gets the highest figures though. I guess this is just a one off.

Good, good, I was quite scared there for a while!

News 24 viewing figures seem to have leveled out now.
It's found an audience and they'll stick with it.

News 24 gets a lot of viewers during the weekend, whereas Sky gets them during the afternoon and early evening.
The breakfast programmes don't really count because the choice of TV is so minimal at that time of the day, there are really only a few options.

Don't forget the viewing figures for the News channels are so low that Barb issues a warning that sample is to small for any reliable data to be gathered.

Just as an example, Big Brother live on E4, showing four sleeping people, got ten times as many viewers than any of the news channels.
