I think News 24 has some serious problems, certainly.

Along with the rest of BBC News, they've now sort of half given up on the corporate branding but not quite, leaving News 24's presentation appearing very confused: it's half dreary old graphics that have been trotted out for the last 4 years, and half bizarre (and poor) new graphics that don't really fit in very well.

News 24's astons and graphix are easily the most "bizzarre" out of BBC News in general, you don't see BBC News 24 style aston designs when you watch any other BBC News outlet, and compared to it's global counterpart, it looks hideous!

OK, I guess the guys at BBC News want to make News 24 stand out more, but they are taking the biscuit.

And whatever generates the astons now seems to have made the graphics look worse especially the info ticker aston, where there is a delay before the second line Exclamation

I perfer watching News 24. After seeing that fat slob, Nick Ferrari slagging off News 24 on Sky News recently (the Sky presenters squirmed with delight), I've begun to feel sorry for N24.

It's certainly come a long way since 1997, but there are aspects of it that are poor - mainly presentation.

It's content is good, it has excellent resources - but yet fails time and again to open their eyes and utilise them.

Sky News has no cause to be chirping about how good it is. It isn't.

It's become a stale incarnation of what it used to be. Gone is the prowess of its former self, and is now just a generic heap of tickety-boo music, slanted opinions and subtle bias.

BBC News 24 provides a valuable service, and it needs to give Sky a good kick up the arse, ratings wise. It will sooner or later.

Who needs Rolling News anyway? You can learn just as much from browsing Ceefax for five minutes as from watching Rolling News all day.

Umm, theres just one snag that Ceefax has no video or pictures.

I prefer News 24 to Sky and itv mainly because I can't stand the tabloid style that the later two use.

Though Sky sometimes can be very impressive (like during Soham) most of the time I don't like the way it covers stories.

That's not to say News 24 doesn't have faults, but in my opinion these are only faults with the graphics. I'm very happy with the presenters that I watch (usually Matthew and Jane, Philippa & Jon/Peter), with the news agenda, the reporters and the general pace.

Yes, some of the presenters could be a bit more relaxed, though this is getting far better, especially Matthew & Jane who are great now. Also sometimes it is a little bit annoying when you flick around and Sky have breaking news not being covered on News 24, but then I turn over and wait for it to be broadcast properly (and verified that it is definitely true, not just a rumour) by News 24.

Sky just gets on my nerves if I watch it for more then a minute because of

- it broadcasting in 4:3
- the stupid swooshes and zips and burps - for Christ's sake it's the news, not sport or a cartoon
- the extremely cheesy, overly tanned, varnished, fake presenters
- it's concentration on tabloid unintelligent stories

Yeah, when they show Pages From Ceefax overnight on BBC2 (weekends and holidays when Learning Zone isn't on) they really should show Pages From BBCi instead - that way there'd be pictures. After all, they'll have to change it sooner or later, because Ceefax will probably close within five years! (when analogue is switched off)

But BBCi has no content whatsoever and unless your digibox has a good cache it's about 3 times slower than ceefax.

Couldn't agree more. Sky and ITV News are so so tabloid'ie.

BBC News 24 seems to have much more gravitas and has good shows like Simpsons World, Hard Talk and Dateline London.

As this poster says news 24 is not without it's problems. But Sky News in particular always reminds me of "The Day Today".

When broadcast as a TV programme rather than interactively, it would be no slowr than rolling video. Don't forget it would be run from the server, and likely be a loop of the webpages. The alternative would seem to be the return of the old testcard.

One thing I've found to be a slight annoyance just lately about BBC News in general . . . My dad has been
watching the cricket coverage on Channel 4, which is broadcast in 16:9. Meanwhile, all of the televised
output from BBC News 24, plus the national 1, 6 and 10 BBC News bulletins are transmitted in 16:9.

So, why is it, when either BBC N24 or the national BBC News bulletins, show clips of the day's cricket
coverage, it's been cropped to 14:9. Surely, if the original material is 16:9, what's the point of cropping
it to 14:9? They don't appear to crop Sky Sports 16:9 material, but they do with C4's cricket stuff.

Cricket is not really a sport I'm interested in, so this issue is only a minor annoyance to me . . .

Yes, Simpsons World is an excellent programme. So simply in its format, and yet incredibly interesting and informative.

Chatterbox isn't on the Ceefax Newsreel anyway. But Chatterbox, Backchat, The Vibe, and the News and Sports letters pages really should be on all four BBCi services. (internet, Sky, Freeview, cable) Very annoying, I agree.
