But surely regardless of whether a channel is mid-relaunch, viewers should still expect the same quality of broadcasting, reporting and general journalism as normal? And does viewer loyalty for news channels really exist (barring people in this forum!)?
The BBC have a habit of inflating viewing figures anyway.
But as Techy and Nicky mentioned, figures haven't been tampered with and they don't include the BBC One broadcasts.
Viewer loyalty does exist. Hence the Fuel Crisis figures for Sky and the fact that regardless of how good the reporting on the BBC was during the F&M Crisis the 6 O'clock News figures skyrocketed.
You simply cannot expect the same quality service during a relaunch - that's absurd! How are Sky supposed to provide the regular quality service when they've demolished their newsroom!?
Tech and Nicky both work for the BBC, they're hardly going to blurt out all of its faults!
I'm not saying the Tory leadship contest one was tampered with but without a doubt the Archer Verdict figures would have included BBC One figures.
And just a quick thought..... Not many Tories like Sky! (that's true actually).
And obviously that cannot account for the viewing figures, although you would expect a lot of Tories watching the news channels at that time.
Nicky said they included figures for MULTI CHANNEL HOMES.
I'm not sure about you but I'm in a multi-channel home and BBC One is on channel 101!
Multi channel homes include Sky, ITV Digital, Cable etc etc.
So BBC One figures WOULD have been included.
I personally don't believe viewers are loyal to a particular station. I believe as viewers go surfing, they are 'grabbed' by a particular story whichever broadcaster is pumping out.
At the end of the report, viewers tend to hang around on the same channel because it gave them something they were interested in & perhaps waiting for more.

Chesh -- remembering that I can't receive either News24 or SkyNews and have no bias toward either -- why should the fact that a channel is broadcasting from a temporary set make much real difference? (It's a serious question)
I can't imagine for one minute that the presenters on Sky News are stuck in front of a few pieces of board cobbled together with a few nails! I'm sure they have a decent set to be going on with!
Surely it's the quality of the news that's of vital importance?

Ahh - I've just seen the vital clue! It's the entire
newsroom
that's been demolished, not just the set!

Is there a News 24 relaunch on the cards? I hope not - not for a while anyway!
Getting back to an earlier post, I like the red BBC ONE clock, because it matches the cream astons better than the purple one does. Perhaps N24 should borrow this aston, no?
Yes Andrew it is the quality of news. And my point is that Sky is not providing its normal quality of news...
It cannot be expected to provide a regular quality of news until things are back to normal.
To say that Sky are working to their full potential at the moment is just stupid!
I'll go down to TVC, demolish the News 24 newsroom and say 'Look - this is News 24 working at full potential', doesn't make sense!
Until September, or October will be the time everything is fully back to normal, we just cannot expect to make a decent comparison between the two.
This is the second time this has happened - it's probably just a one off, then again it may not be... but It seems too much of a coincidence that Sky are in the middle of a relaunch.
If it was during regular programming, when everything was normal then Sky would have something to worry about. But at the moment I think their priorities are elsewhere.
To say viewer loyalty doesn't exist is beyond ridiculous.
The BBC continually gets higher figures for election nights - it did in 1997 even though the BBC Election 97 was possibly the worst election programme ever put out by the corporation.
Viewer loyalty for news certainly exists, especially during a national event.

How can figures be fiddled with when the box registers which channel you are watching?

Fair comment Chesh. I hadn't noted that it was the entire newsroom that had gone -- I'd taken as being only the set was temporary.

I'm not saying you messed with the figures. I've no doubt the figures were accurate!
But the Archer Verdict figures WILL have been included from BBC One.
BBC One is available in Multi channel homes.
Nicky said that the figures were from Multi channel homes...
In multi channels homes BBC One is a channel and the programme was a News 24 programme.
Figures WILL have been included from BBC One, that's certain.
Overnights you take the viewing figures from BBC One (in multi channel homes too!) and add them to News 24 and then call them 'News 24's overnight viewing figures'.
