'older'? Speak for yourself. You may well be old but I am young and as free as a fart.

Cheshirec is a totally different animal to c@t. Cheshirec is evil and dangerous whereas c@t is quirky and sometimes bitchy.

While we're on the subject of this forum, can we have some new face people, these things > http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/cheesy.gif

I hate them.

Couldn't agree with you more chesh, thesehttp://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif
are a bit old now and some nice new MSN style smileys would be nice!!

(Oh by the way, I didn't mean older as in age but as in how long we have been using the forum!).

Excellent - well done News 24! Is this the first year they've decided to do it? Someone made a good decision there....

Cheers, Asa

I think this is the first year that a Christmas tree has been added to the main news set.

As I may have mentioned before there were three silver Christmas trees added to the News 24 soft set for Christmas 1997, in the first of the two flags eras - when the soft set had two sofas, one blue, one orange (now used for News 24 guest seating!) They were kept in shot at all times - even on Europe Direct (which went out on BBC World) but I guess Europe celebrates Christmas almost universally so there was less of an issue than during a news broadcast.

The trees were very modern, silver skeleton constructions, quite stylish, and in keeping with the then look of the channel. There was a little one which sat on the table in front of the in-vision monitor. When the monitor was used for hands to weather it was possible to align the tree so that it looked like the weather presenter was the angel at the top of the tree ! (Not that any of the News 24 presenters would have been that juvenile... Oh No...)

Christmas 1997 was the year when a certain News 24 presenter was rather merry whilst presenting - with some legendary sports hands...

Looks a bit thin.

But seriously, well done to the BBC. At least they're bothering to take note of public opinion - suppose they have to really, considering we pay for them - and are changing things accordingly.

My god yes, I remember the hundreds of people outside TV Centre last year holding placards and shouting 'We want a Christmas Tree on News 24 http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/shocked.gif http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/cheesy.gif http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I thought it was said earlier that they'd either remove the Christmas tree overnight or stick to tight shots?

They didn't at 1am. We got a nice wide shot of the studio, tree and everything, before it cut to Deborah McKenzie rather suddenly!

The tree is not being removed overnight. The apparent plan is to allow it in shot for the opening establishing high wideshot, but to try and shoot studio interviews, and headlines without using shots which feature it.

This is likely to mean quarter past headlines are shot on a different camera, and only one of the three common studio interview two shots used.

This restriction is obviously only for the portions of the output which are shared with BBC World, at other times the tree can be seen (as output is only on News 24 and BBC One at these times)

Does anyone know what the BBC do with the trees when they take them down, is there a department that untresses them and boxes them up, do they get labled (e.g. Breakfast Tree 1) and put fully dressed in a cupboard or do they just live out of shot for the rest of the year?

PS: it would be funny thought if the presenters of News 24 moved the tree in from the breakfast studio on their own, you could imagine them dragging it round the desk!!

Suspect the trees are hired from a prop supply agency, or possibly from what was the BBC props store.

There are quite a lot of safety issues involved in stuff to go into studios (no glass, fire proof stuff etc) so I expect a designer was also involved to ensure that all the correct regulations were observed.

I don't think its worth starting a new thread, so here goes. I've noticed that next Saturday, Jon Kay is doing the 0900-1300 slot on News 24. I've never heard of him before, is he a correspondent? Another one is Alastair Yates. He's doing the overnight shoft, and I've never heard of him either, or I don't think I have!

Alistair Yates rings a bell for me.. Could be wrong but isn't he one of the overnight presenters on News Interactive?

There are actually quite a few people doing news interactive, will be interesting to see who we get on 25th/26th..

Yep Jon Kay is a correspondent. He was at the m5/m4 junction for a report on the 'christmas getaway' (never seen it myself!) on Friday's One O'Clock News.
