Three pages of discussion about something that may or may not happen, including some people picking on the astons and music, when (one would assume) news is actually the most important element of a rolling news channel. Why am I not surprised?
And now someone will respond with 'but this is a TV presentation site'

You're right, Neil. I too pointed this out on page 1, but nobody listens.
As I have said before, I hope to god that 95% of those reading this forum don't get into broadcasting, because frankly most have no idea what they're talking about.
The reason News 24 does so terribly, is not because it's supers are too big, or its clock the wrong colour, but because it has an unappealing agenda, a dreary style of news delivery, and a interminably stuffy atmosphere.
It's great for the central London types, the Independent readers, and you can claim it's better than Sky News all you want - but there's an entire industry out there that disagrees with you.

Finally the voice of reason has landed in this thread!

Ok - Come on c@t, you can tell us. How much has Murdoch transfered to your bank account?
I have transferred to his bank account a hell of a lot more than he has transferred to mine.
I'm simply saying that it's increadibly naive and frankly downright stupid of people here to say "oh, News 24 is doing badly because it looks rubbish and isn't all tabloid-y".
Bullsh-t.
News 24 is doing badly because it is the worst news channel at dealing with live events, it has presenters and producers so wrapped up in red tape that they have to check about five times before they do one thing. This culture of bureaucracy is reflected all too obviously on screen. Despite the vastness of BBC newsgathering capabilities, they frequently miss live news conferences because they are too afraid to break out of their 30 minute headline summaries, their sports or business updates, their trailers.
It SHOULD be the best news channel in the world - Sky, CNN, Fox, they'd give their teeth to not have to run adverts and enjoy a secure income year after year. NEVER should News 24 presenters say "we're out of time, we're going to have to go" - you don't have to go, you don't have to go anywhere, you're not working within advertising boundaries, you've got all of the time in the world. Run behind "schedule" if you have to, no-one's going to give a sh-t in the long run because no-one's watching.
The biggest problem for News 24 is that the BBC is feeble and wimpish. It is afraid to experiment with new ideas and concepts - remember that this was the organisation that rubbished CNN when it first launched, adament that it would not gain access to the EBU feeds, because it was a nothing, a silly little idea that would never work.
Yeah, spot on BBC, twenty three years later and CNN is only the most successful television news brand on the planet.

I wouldn't disagree with any of what you said there c@t. I'm not biased to one news channel over the other, I like to watch all three of them (that ive got on freeview that is!), and after watching sky news for a while, news 24 does seem exceedingly slow and boring.
in 1997 news 24 was very relaxed and informal (to the eye) but the agenda and format remained the same: presenter talks, report plays, next item. sky news does it in a much better way, live reports, newswall analysis, interviews, brief summaries of the stories at the TOTH and more later etc.
but should news 24 try and be like sky news?, if there was a breaking news story i would of course watch sky news. even the sky alerts system breaks news faster than news 24. however, if i had 30 minutes and i wanted to know what was going on around the globe i would watch news 24. i like there to be variation between the channels. i don't think you can doubt that sky news is more of a success than news 24.
but i don't think you can say that all of news 24's problems are with the format & style of the channel, and not just the presentation. if the newsroom was more active and the general feel of the channel more active then it would make a difference of sorts. and how anyone can say the music doesn't ned changing after nearly half a decade i dont know!
5pm earlier the White House news conference began with Bush and Sharon.
I was watching News 24 at the time, where they broke off a trailer which was going to preceed the countdown, to go live to the conference.
Sky News however were still in their ad breaks, and even played the full intro and headline sequences at 5pm, with no mention of the news conference for a good few minutes.
You seem to be speaking in a past tense, Cat. News 24 has been rather wrapped up in schedules, poor content etc. in the past, but it is slowly but very surely finding it's feet when it comes to broadcasting breaking news and live events.
Admitedly it has taken 6 years to start to make headway, but all news channels have difficult times in years proceeding their launch.
Sky News IMO is far too tabloid. You can tell it's connected to The Sun newspaper. One thing in Sky's favour is that it isn't scared to be inovative. Yes, it could be a hell of a lot more inovative, but ultimately it all comes down to costs. Sky News is run on a shoestring compared to the BBC, and that is why the BBC dosen't really have any vaid excuses to why it cannot excel itself when it comes to being inovative with news presentation and coverage.

I tried to point out last night that this is a discussion about a ticker and therefore it's perfectly reasonable to whinge on about graphics not being up to scratch.
I have to agree with you about the "we're out of time" thing. The only time I think that should be allowed to happen is during structured shows like the .30 shows and Breakfast/W24 - otherwise there is simply no need.
If BBC News 24 introduces some sort of ticker, do you think it will be seen during the overnight simulcasts on BBC World?
Could it be overlayed with the BBC News 24 dog so that only the UK audience would see it? Of course it still buggers up the astons forcing them to be adjusted probabaly making them look stupid on World like with the clock space.
