Are we to assume that after yesterday's announcement of a choice of regions available on DSAT on BBC1 from January, that the News 24 interactive service has been delayed/postponed/cancelled indefinitely?

When I emailed them they said it would be this autumn, but presumably it would have been announced yesterday along with the regional stuff if there was any chance of it happening at all soon?

Yes, I do remember earlier this year a forum member stated that the interactive service would be on air about October time.

I think News Interactive may have been delayed a bit due to the need to install and upgrade kit in the News Centre. With the current news situation this may take a bit of time - as joint weekends with 24 and World may be less easy to arrange.

If News Interactive is going to run a bit like Sky - then they only need one video stream (broadcasting 4 quarter screen feeds) It would be possible to feed this in addition to the 5 regional opts, and possibly a multiscreen menu, on the Interactive transponder.

(You can squeeze up to 11 feeds onto a transponder if you accept the awful picture quality that C4 are currently. I think that the Beeb will use the space the regions are using at other times for sport though - so 6-7 streams is the real maximum for reasonable quality)

I would have thought the BBC will still launch an interactive service but Dyke's desire to see regional programmes there too will mean the service will be a cut-down version of what's in the pipeline. I expect the BBC will do its usual thing of launching softly and build and build quickly from there.

I seem to remember an article in UK press gazette saying the BBC's interactive news wasn't being run by News 24, but by News Online. Shocked

IMHO I think the Beeb are so keen to put up something like Sky's that they won't let something like Regions get in the way.

January seems to be a key month for the BBC. BBC Four and the two new childrens channel will begin, regional news on Sky Digital and now BBC News Interactive.

The interactive service on News 24 is jointly produced by BBC New Media, BBC News Online and BBC News 24 ... each providing the relevant parts/expertise.

According to Lyngsat dot com it's actually started test broadcasts .... there's a 'mosaic' channel broadcasting, although I can't get my digibox to actually view it Sad

So ... I would imagine launch is imminant.

It would be nice - perhaps what Nicky says suggests they might - tie the TV interactive service into the news 24 website.

So you can get an idea of what live events News 24 or interactive will be covering each day, get more details about guests, special programmes, etc. etc. Generally a sort of more detailed running order.

I imagine if BBC online are involved they may also be looking to make all the video content automatically available on the website as well.

The BBC Text service already has way more information than Sky Text and Sky News Active combined, so, if such ratings are done, I would have thought when they launch BBCi it'll overtake Sky pretty quickly.

yup ... there's a lot of close ties between news 24 interactive and news online ... although the whole thing's gonna be called BBCi from soonish anyway.

there's a lot of mumblings in the beeb of all web/interactive content being available on all platforms from web to web TV to online and interactive TV ... which is a damn fine idea, if you ask me!

Just get me news online on my sky digibox, and I'll be happy Smile I never use those bloody video screens anyway Smile if it's important enough it'll be on the main channel
