The BBC call them info bursts.
I know a person at BBC World who thinks they are the bee's knees..
BBC World has its own stlye info burst, replacing the 24 with a globe.
They don't look untidy, and the idea was probably stolen from Sky's budget coverage, which had used this style for ages.
They are annoying though, you cannot see the person much and when they broadcast a press conference with them the picture on Sky News Active is bigger!
The most annoying and totally unrequired graphics I have seen on on News 24 is ones where they go live to one of the BBC's newsroom and shrink the picture slightly so that there is a border around it and in the top right they have the name of the place, so they would have BELFAST for example.
Also... during the Dando Verdict, Sky started using split screen graphics, like during the election - which was excellent.
The BBC must have been watching Sky and started to use them themselves about 20 mins later!!
Think of something new BBC!

I've only just noticed the new Breaking News aston on N24...
...
UURRRGGHHHHHH!!!
Dont the BBC know that bright red, and purple CLASH!
Bring back the breaking news aston in the top left!
<mutters to himself, and the odd word like 'b******s' is heard>

Na, the Beeb have used split screens for donkeys years, since the mid 80's! I should know, I helped design them on the old Quantel 5000. Before that, a nifty little wipe on the vision mixer.
They use them when they have 2 or more concurrent scenes or reporters which they want to show.

haha!
rude word filter - i dont know what to make of it!!
Not on News 24 they haven't used them for 'ages'.
They always turn to the plasma screen.
Unless they use the Infobursts of course!
Still don't like 'em, nor the breaking news astons. If they use them on their own without a story aston, it looks sooo stupid floating around in mid-air.
The breaking news aston without the text at the bottom does look stupid.
I recon it is just the BBC wanting to play around with new toys, regardless of how stupid they look!
I could understand them sliding in and the purple bit dropping down and the text changing a couple of times but during the Milosevic, Dando, Bulger events they became increadibly annoying, I wrote to the BBC about it, but because I used e-mail it will not be taken at all seriously.
The ITC are the best organisation in the the world for responses.
You email them with your concerns and they will write a personal letter back and provide you with all of their research into the matter.
Shame they are going really.
Actually Chesh, rest assured, your email will be taken seriously, and will be read by all the suits.
The Duty Logs which in the old days just covered phone calls and letters, now carry emails, and
all
head of departments get to see them. They may not reply to every single one, but it will be read
Trust Me!!

When I say Trust Me, then Trust Me! emails ARE read and taken just as seriously as letters or phone calls. Meetings are held every week to discuss these things.
But the people who deal with them (ahem!) are very busy people and don't always reply.
In fact, if you knew just how many letters/emails/calls we get, you would understand. Especially now email is so widely used, we get swamped with them.
But trust me (there I go again!! they are read & discussed

We all know that emails are just read then someone sends back a reply saying 'oh yeah, sorry about that'.
The only personal email I have ever had is from UK Today.
