Was anyone else a little disappointed by how they brought in the New Year?
It's about 45 minutes into the iPlayer link above - Gethin asking people on the Embankment their new year's resolutions, followed by 12 minutes of fireworks (and pointless comments over the top). No music, or shots from elsewhere.

The party I was at didn't have any broadcast telly, so we put on the News 24 live stream (figuring that being 10 seconds or so of delay wouldn't be too bad, and I think we were roughly the right distance away from Waterloo for it to just about sync up with what we were hearing out the window), though having watched how BBC Scotland did it ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/item/b008l2tk.shtml - 15 minutes in), think we'd have been better off on their live stream instead. A piper to see out 2007, the sounds of Big Ben, and a shot of someone seemingly pretending to fire a cannon. And then some nice firework shots with Auld Lang Syne. Far more jolly!

I agree, I don't recall a commentary over the last two years shows.

If you are referring to the Fireworks on BBC One then you are mis-remembering.

2005 into 2006 had Claire Balding at the Embankment commentating. Whilst Claire is an excellent broadcaster, it is widely felt that there was far too much commentary that year and that less would definitely have been more.

2006 into 2007 had Nick Knowles at the Embankment commentating. Far more sparse commentary - thankfully - but when Nick did say something it was anodyne, bland and generally pretty bad. (I think he is massively over-rated - which I think he ably demonstrated this year...)

2007 into 2008 had Gethin Jones commentating. He probably did a better job than either of the previous encumbents. Sparser commentary than Claire, but not as annoying as Nick.

Was a shame not to have it on BBC HD this year, it looked stunning last year but Jules Holland took priority this time.

As discussed on the other New Year thread, I think Hogmanay Live was MUCH better. BBC Scotland have been doing that show for years (its perhaps a Hogmanay institution) and this comes across on screen.

The perfect mix of old and new, reflection and looking forward, calm reflective folk music and party atmosphere with fireworks etc.

Hogmanay Live - networked next year hopefully!

I can't imagine the Hootenanny studio having anything that would be particularly enhanced by HD. It should really have been New Year Live in HD.

They could at least make it available on BBCi if nothing else.

Probably more a case that Later with Jools has been shot in HD for a number of years now (initially in a TVC studio but using Alfacam's HD OB trucks, then the BBC HD OB truck, though now TC1 is HD they may have used this for Hootenanny?) - so doing the Hootenanny in SD would have been an odd move I guess, and may not have saved shedloads of money over doing it in HD.

Doing the Fireworks in HD would have cost a lot more than in SD - and it could be that BBC HD decided not to spend their small HD budget this way? Also given that the PVT only granted an HD full service late in 2007, they may not have had the budget to commission HD fireworks this time.

Doing the whole New Year Live in HD would have been pretty expensive - AIUI it isn't a huge budget show, so would have needed quite a cash injection to have been in HD. Particularly when it comes to the multiple links required between the Embankment and Somerset House OBs, and to TVC.

Hmm - I suspect it is probably felt to be a bit too "BBC Scotland" for networking.

I'll guarantee you the suits at network believe it to be too twee and Scottish. This was highlighted when they agreed to network the Scotland offering one year, but only if it was renamed 'New Year Live' and wasn't 'too Scottish'. This resulted in, quite frankly, a horrific, compromised show.

People in England are a bit more open to tradition than management give them credit for. And the average audience is a lot older that the supposed trendsetters in the Groucho Club probably reckon as well.

It's probably best for viewers in Scotland that the two stay separate, because it would avoid any further interference which may ruin the programme.
