Why does this have to be branded as 'The People Play'? - I mean, obviously I know 'why' to differentiate it from the Celeb editions, but when it started it was always about the general public playing.

I think you've half answered your own question there. It's because we've had years of mainly celeb episodes.

I noticed there's a fourth lifeline in the opening titles that they don't actually appear to use in the game?

Millionaire is so stale - even with its numerous revamps. I thought it would be great live with a time limit on the questions, but in reality it means you lose the funny chat between host and contestant. When it was pre-recorded they could have a bit of chat and cut out any boring bits. With the time limit, the chat is gone.

What made the original so compelling was how simple and tense it was. The show has been revamped and vajazzled too many times over recent years, with it's tinny disco theme tune remix, tacky 3D opening titles, it's way too showbiz now. I miss the original opening titles which were beautifully executed.

That's 'Switch', which is only available from question 8 onwards (the same time the clock is abolished).

I agree the show has been desperately tampered with too much. Watching the classic episodes on Challenge reminds you of how well it used to work.

The thing is, the 'tension' was a gimmick - albeit a very good one, but in common with all gimmicks it eventually stopped being a draw in and of itself. Very few modern game show formats rely on it now, in fact I can't think of one in the last couple of years (and that's a good thing, as apart from Millionaire I felt it just stifled the flow of things).

Out of curiosity, has anyone hit the million jackpot since the 12 question format?

Don't think so, so that would mean 6 years without a big winner....If this was in the USA, it would have been cancelled a long time ago.

ITV and Victory Television need to shake it up radically, or failing that end it...

I don't think anyone has even got to £250,000, let alone the million. Shocked

It's become an impenetrable quiz which is probably a factor for people turning off. I wonder if a winner would inject some interest. That said, it may be too late - like I'm sure not many people would really be that bothered if someone hit the jackpot on stale old DOND these days because it's all been done before.

If they were insistent on keeping it alive without anyone getting near the top prize, any mileage in a daytime/5pm slot in the summer perhaps? Has this ever been tried in the UK?

They already did, do you mean unshake it up?

They used to show classic episodes in that slot a few years back. The problem is you would have to keep the prizes very low indeed so to make it worthwhile considering the lower ad revenue for that time.

The problem is the contestants appear to be picked on their quirkiness or sob story rather than intelligence. Perhaps they need to bring back Fastest Finger First.

Or even spin it off and do the Hot Seat version like Australia did...

Take the USA version for example, it was ultimately low ratings and to many celeb specials resulted in the Primetime version get cancelled and put into daytime syndication.

That's shown in GSN's Gameshow Hall of Fame when they looked over Millionaire.

But yet here in the UK, we seem to keep wheeling things out after their sell by date.
