Why are people obsessed with opting for a forum software which you have to pay for, there are many good free alternatives.
I can't say I'd fancy trying to code my own forum software (which Asa's doing), I'm guessing it may be based on PHPBB, however it's still a lot of hard work trying to ensure everying works without bugs / security loopholes.

What message? I hope he converts us over to vBulletin!

phpBB is open source which suggests it may be a basis for some of the code.
Of course if the software is exceptionally obscure, which being one of a kind, it will be, there is a the potential for it never neing attacked due to the effort.
I doubt idiots like seamus would ever try such a thing, they prefer to damage the board by posting.

Well Asa has made PHPBB very good, I've recently installed the latest version of PHPBB, immediately I've spotted differences in registration etc and stuff, I'd still love to know how Asa creates that bespoke front page!

To be honest with you, i honestly don't know why you bother making the forum custom built. It all gets used for the same thing at the end of the day, so why not use standard bulletin board software with a nice skin on it? It just saves a lot of time doesn't it?
On the point of phpBB, yes it's free but it also feels free. I think Invision and vBulletin are much better bulletin board systems. I've not used any others so can't comment. I have used Snitz though, that's awful!

Because Asa is really interested in that kind of thing as his constant customisation of this forum has shown. To be honest if you are gonna customise things that much you're better off knowing the whole thing inside out.

Exactly right. Although I've enjoyed rummaging around phpBB for the past few years, sometimes there's nothing like starting from a blank canvas. The last update here - mock ratings - was very much a 'hacked on' mod which from a development (and probably user) point of view can be done much better.
The software is entirely my own (although for testing, phpBB's BBCode is being used) and they'll be a few features that will be either better done or new to the site. Some might be dropped during user testing but they may go down quite well so we shall see. More will be revealed on the day!
harshy, that front page is done because the only phpBB code is for five lines at the top of the page - the rest is my own php
OPTIX, all your details will be taken forward so you'll have to do nothing other than log in again.
Cheers, Asa
