I think Spencer is right. Certainly some of the numbers are "protected" (ie 101-105), and other channels contractually "own" their place (and the subsequent 2) on the EPG that they currently occupy.
Remember that this is the reason ITV3 was allowed to launch on 119, since GSkyB owned 118, 119 and 120. I suspect that ITV4 will go onto 120. Similarly, Sky Three will go into the vacant 108 slot.
I know that Sky are planning to reorganise the EPG, but I don't think that they can move most of the popular entertainment section without the consent of the channel owners - and certainly not to their disadvantage (ie pushing them further down the listings). So I can't see the sports channels suddenly appearing in the mid 100s.

They probably just used 109 to see how quickly they could wind up anoraks on internet forums.

First of all, I am not an anorak. I was looking at the Sky+ site for my grandparents, how have just had it installed today. I had noticed this thread and thought it was strange that Sky News is shown to be on 401 and Sky Sports on 109.
Secondly, Sky can do what they like with any broadcasters' channel numbers - it just makes sense for 101-105 to be for the main terrestrial channels. They certainly don't need consent.

My Thomson "Banyan" box (DSI-4210) was updated with the new look EPG overnight.

Nope. It has been stipulated by the regulatory authorities that 101-105 must be available to the various terrestrial channels.

Oh right, didn't realise that - but effectively - for the rest of the EPG, Sky can put any channel where it likes. It doesn't need to get the consent from the channel involved in order to move it.

Just wonderning does you sky box have to be connected to the phone line for the upate? a friend of mine has a brand new pace box and hasn't had any update, but her box isn't connected to the phone line, whilst mine is and I haven't received the update and I have a Grundig box, any ideas when the rest of us will have the updates? are they doing it by postcode's?

Screenshots of the next EPG upgrade are now available on
DigitalSpy
:
Sky EPG v4
The style is the same as the v3 most people now have with the latest upgrade, but some of the screenshots are different to what I was expecting - especially the apparent increase to 50 "Favourite Channels" from the current 20.
EDIT: I hope they don't leave the (almost) 1 million Sky+ customers until last again for an upgrade of the new software
. I imagine that the major reorganisation of the channel numbers will not take place until they are certain that most boxes have the additional funationality (or is it actually already there - but not enabled?
)
I also hope that the Sky+ Planner will be accessibly via the previously unused green button on the remote (as suggested by DigitalSpy ).
