That's never stopped broadcasters doing it before.
As examples: 'Law & Order' is shown by both 5USA (Viacom) and also Universal TV (Comcast/Sky); Family Guy is shown on ITV2, but also Fox; Simpsons is shown on C4 and also Sky One.
Friends might expire on CC, but Sky possibly wont get the rights to show it because of Channel 5 on the platform, and Sky possibly don't want the same show being aired by a different company on the same platform

Given the massive gap it would leave in the schedule, if it did happen, they would probably end up closing Comedy Central Extra and moving the remaining content over to the main channel.
The only way I could see the 2 channels surviving in this scenario would be if they had a major new acquisition.
What will CC show if they lose the rights to Friends? It's virtualy all they show.

Comedy Central (and before that Paramount Comedy / Paramount Channel) were very different channels before they had Friends.
Comedy Central Extra is a completely different channel to what it used to be. Nowadays it is very similar to the main channel, but it previously used to show a lot of classic British comedy.

There aren't many channels now that show "classic" British comedy as a whole, anything older than the turn of the century that is aired is split between Gold, ITV3, sometimes ITV4 and (most Saturday nights) BBC2. I dare say these commercial outlets stomach its costs by either cherrypicking the better known stuff or buffering it between modern day programmes.

Big Bang repeats are just about the only thing that rates for E4 so cant see them going any time soon.
Well it's only a matter of time before E4 dump The Big Bang Theory.

It seems unfortunate, when I've been in the US there's several channels full of 50s-70s stuff, but you pretty much never see it on TV over here. I guess there isn't seen as enough of an audience for that stuff that old over here for it to be worth showing, but it still seems quite popular over there, and I admit I have a fondness for US TV shows from that era.

Granada plus/UK Gold, parts of UKTV etc when they all started, had plenty of old stuff but now it's all the same old crap.
