When Pick was known as Sky Three, then it made sense to have Sky One and Sky Two. But when Atlantic launched and Sky acquired Living then Two and Three became low priority. But this was in 2011 and amazingly both channels are still on air.

Sky One didn’t have a Sky Two from 1989 to 1996 and then again from 1997 to 2005. They had a supplementary channel called Sky One Mix, that became Sky Mix before it eventually became Sky Two.

Sky Two of 1996-97 was not the Sky Two we have today. It was basically a channel with its own output outright. However most of what was shown didn’t rate well causing Sky to pull the plug in less than a year. The frequency was replaced with the National Geographic Channel.

I'm curious, wasn't National Geographic launched at that point or was it launched to co-incide with the launch of children's network, Fox Kids?

National Geographic launched on September 1st 1997, the day after Sky Two ended. Fox Kids and Sky Two had shared the shame frequency for the best part of a year prior to the launch of NG.

Then in 1998 when NBC Europe ended (except in Germany), National Geographic took that slot on whatever satellite NBC was being broadcast on. However my understanding is that no UK Cable provider showed that version of NG.

Yeah, Fox Kids launched October 19th 1996. seven weeks after Sky 2.

I think with all these new category specific channels Sky Two's days are numbered. It wouldn't completely surprise if Sky might eventually rebrand Pick to include the Sky branding (e.g. Sky Pick or Sky Showcase). With new owners and rumours of them wanting a slot on Freeview for Sky Arts (CCXTV on 23 springs to mind) they appear to be increasing their presence on non-Sky platforms.

Sky 2's days seem to have been numbered for years - we were probably saying the same when Sky Atlantic and Sky Living launched to form their main three channel portfolio.

I do think there is a danger though that launching all these genre based channels risks weakening rather than stregnthening the Sky brand if they're having to find enough content to fill the hours.

I think the opposite. It’s all about positioning Sky as somewhere you can see content in all these genres. It’s a direct attack on Netflix. People value quality content these days.

Agree with the comments about rebranding Pick to be a Sky channel. Seems a much smarter move to put out a quality free product to promote your brand rather than a channel like Pick filled with nothing. Sky have an absolute tonne of quality programming they could fill it with without damaging their pay offering.

Whilst I get that, the channels are merely just a linear outlet for all of the programmes they’ve acquired for On Demand/Box Sets where extra advertising revenue and promotion can be made. Everything on Sky Comedy can be watched on demand. Can’t speak for Sky Crime’s output but I can imagine that being similar.

Just for the sake of it..

Sky Arts is making some of its content available for free online from today, which could be a sign that the channel will go fta at some point as previously reported.

Recently signed up for Now TV (plenty of time on my hands!). One thing that’s struck me - Sky branded channels are well-presented as always, but the channels like Comedy Central and SyFy are remarkably slick as well. Do Sky have something to do with their running? Was wondering if maybe there was some sort of investment in them from Sky in order to bolster their entertainment offering.
