I have had a phone call from Sky asking about our Sky+ (we own the 160) and I was told about a super-dooper one for £400.

Is there such a thing?

As far as I know the 160 is still the top end box (though it's cheaper to get a standard one and upgrade the disk yourself than buy the 160).

The new Pace one is a V3, and has an 80GB disk. Mysteriously, only 40GB is available for recordings, the same as the V1 and V2 boxes. The rest of the space is "reserved for use by Sky".

I think the Sky+ 160 IS the super duper one - it was certainly more expensive than the standard Pace v1 and v2, and the Amstrad v1 (which looks like a mirror image of the Pave v2)

The new Sky HD service will also use a Sky+ like receiver - but these aren't available yet.

The fella knew we had the 160, and he thought £199 was expensive. He then said about this super one for £400, but the 160 is £400 (wo/Multiroom)

There is a new version, very recently introduced, that has a 160 GB HDD, but only 80 GB of it is used for recording.

That's Sky+ 160, isn't it? The images on Digital Spy Forums show the system that is the 160 version, but the viewing card area has moved and the panel has no "160" on it.

No, it's not the 160, even though it has 160GB, as only 80GB is for recording, the rest of the hard drive is "owned by sky" for them to do what they want with (enhanced applications etc.).

The Sky+ 160 is still the premium box until HD arrives. This new version 3 with 80GB recording space (as opposed to 40GB on V1&2) is replacing the old Sky+ boxes on new installs - there's no difference in price, as soon as the installer runs out of the old ones they start installing these, and rumour has it Sky are considering giving them out for free soon.

Sounds to me like he was trying to sell you the 160 if it was £400, because there's no other digibox as expensive as that at the moment. I'm sure it's not a trial of the HD service, because you'd need a new TV for that too!

If Sky are considering giving out Sky+ boxes free, I'm having one! Especially if they ditch the extra subscription.

I've always considered the additional monthly subscription for Sky+ to be greedy and unnecessary. Even though
the Sky+ service would be great to have, that has been the one thing that has put me off upgrading my service.

Actually Blake, ours was ordered with Multiroom, so we got the box for £200.

I still have no idea why he was talking aout a new one.

DJGM if you have the sky movie package, sky sports package or the sky world package then if you upgrade to sky+ there is no extra subscription but only if you are currently on the 3 highest packages any lower e.g. the family pack then you need to pay ten pounds a month extra if you don't upgrade.

I have Movies 1 & 2 so don't pay extra for Sky+, and I managed to get the box (V1) for only £49 with free installation. A few of my friends also got the same deal, but I'm not sure whether it's still available. I got the phone number off DigitalSpy. You basicially ring up and threaten to cancel, then they offer you a box for £49. It was fitted 2 days later (at 8am on a Sunday morning though - Grrrrrr Confused )

It's still an extra cost, and more than I'm willing to line Murdoch's pockets with! I'm sticking with the family pack!
