Hmm... i'm not sure I like it...
I can see the comedy element and they're filmed very nicely - they've got a high production value, but it's a bit of a crap idea.
Well, anything's better than that terrible "coloured socks of old ladies in church" look, which was probably the worst in history...

Cheers. Both examples are rather odd as you say, as no-one's actually bouncing on the hoppers - Hill just shows a load of them without any people in sight, and the Viking fight one is even stranger with two blokes using them as hand weapons to attack each other
The music (which is the same on both) doesn't work IMO, and is similarly odd!
They don't really look like 'idents' per se (esp. Viking; if I didn't know any better I'd probably mistake that for a trail or something else).
I expect a logo down the bottom of the screen or something (I think it could do with one) but there doesn't look to be one, as the logo is on the hoppers - but this doesn't seem to be a particularly good move, as depending on the action, it can get rather obscured at times.
Here is a still of that bumper I saw:

Although just a bumper, again not very good logo-wise, as it's on the front of the hopper and the shot is from the side so you can't really see it.

Grrr...who else is sick of the Yellow BBC2 idents being referred to as 'fluffy 2's'?
In February, BBC2 retired its playful, fluffy "2" promotional clips after five years
The only fluffy 2 was the pedigree comedy 2, what was fluffy about the regular idents?!? </End Of Rant>
Right onto UKTV Gold, the Hopper Hill ident cries out Sony Bravia to me and I haven't a clue what is going on in the Viking one.
I'd of thought these would have been better suited to UKTV G2 (I still say bring back the fireworks!!).

Anyone notice the 2 idents on that Media Guardian article are both in letterbox widescreen - could this be a clue everything is going to be changing to widescreen next week?
I quite like those idents - they look odd, but in a good way.

Indeed, Gold doesn't mean old at all, UKTV don't market it as a channel showing old programmes and haven't for many many years.
Gold can mean many things, but it rarely pertains to history, except for a golden anniversary

Gold doesn't have to mean Old, I'm Alan Partridge, The Day Today, Porridge, Bottom. Not all of them are old, but they are all great!

Don't assume anything, they'd be stupid not to make their idents in widescreen these days. I'd have thought that all their idents have been produced in 16:9 for several years now
