Why is it that Ant and Dec can broadcast live from Australia, newsreaders can be live from allover the world, yet Question Time broadcasting from somewhere in England has technical standards like watching an early OB from the 1980s?

Hmmm, the Ant and Dec thing has been set up as a semi-professional rig over a few weeks, and the average OB news broadcast is hardly any better than QT!

Having said that I agree that the technical standards are not much cop. The astons used yesterday looked as if they were set up for 4:3 and stretched out, frequently going over the safe area (damn that Janet Street-Porter for having such a silly double-barrelled name!). Not that that bothers me, but it's sure to get the 4:3 refuseniks hot under thew collar!!

No amount of set changes will alter that, it has been a problem long before TV Wink

Oh no, I won't have that.

Politicians used to talk carp because they were cranks who genuinely believed the rubbish they were spouting. Think Foot, Powell, Benn or Widdecombe, or latterly Short and IDS.

Modern political hacks (personified by both Blair and Cameron) just say whatever ill-advised nonsense they think will get them attention and votes.

Totally different animals, and we can blame the press and TV for that.

Oh I thought you we're talking about the new ones. No the current graphics are Lambie-Nairn I believe.
I thought the 2006-07 were alright, but much better when used in full and not cut down.

Is today a good day for Question Time to be vague/misleading/dishonest (delete as applicable) about how much it costs to call them?

http://www.rp-network.com/tvforum/uploads/1_copy7.jpg

They use an 09011 number. I think this number costs 25p per call (not 25p per minute). My understanding of the rules is 25p is not technically a premium rate so they don't have to give pricing information on screen (although you could argue that it would be wise to be whiter than white at the moment).

They have stated 'normal network rates apply', this is one of those phrases that means nothing anyway but I bet most people wouldn't class 25p a call as a 'normal network rate'.

How long have they been using this number/wording?

Question Time still looks pants because it is recorded at BBC Westminster to allow it to be edited prior to transmission. The lines to and from Millbank are still ancient PAL composite digital circuits, that absolutely mangle the picture as they move to and from the facilities there. If the route from the OB to Westminster is still also through the nearest BBC regional centre then this may also add a PAL circuit (depends on the region). This is likely to change over the next few months as a new BBC lines system (RAMAN) is introduced which is uncompressed component digital AIUI.

That won't solve the issues at the OB - which is now resourced by Arqiva - who have an OB arm containing what is left of the Scanners OB operation (using an HD capable truck I believe).

I can't imagine the OB budget is huge these days.

Too much clapping on Question Time. The audience seem to clap after every sentence.

Loved the rivalry between Melanie Philips and Peter Hain tonight.. I thought she was going to slap him at one point.
