Quote: from Aaron J Tibbett on 4:50 pm on Dec. 8, 2001I've had digital ITV/ITV1 for around a year now, and ever since, its always had Emmerdale cropped on Carlton/LWT and Anglia, along with Trisha and other programmes.

They make sure they frame it for a 14:9 crop, so ideally u dont miss anything, but it doesn't normally take into the overscan, so things appear very close to the top and bottom of screen.

As for the reason, I don't know, I did have a reply from Carlton, but I can't remember what the answer was.

Off Topic, but Emmerdale is recorded in 14:9 Protected mode, hence it is made to be broadcast like this. But I'm not keen, as it reduces the picture quality. They should just leave it alone; SMG does I believe...

Anyway, back to Neighbours.....

Home and Away will be in widescreen from Christmas. Rather than totally re-shoot the credits they seem to have stretched/zoomed them.
I think actually when they were made they were produced in 16:9 so as to be ready for when Aus went digital on the 1st of Jan 2001. When we had the H&A catchup programme earlier on this year on (5) that had newly shot scene's in it which we're in 16:9, and full 16:9 titles were used, which were not just a stretched / cropped version - there was extra bits at the side.

Cheers,

Yes, all H&A episodes from January 2001 onwards have been shot in 16:9, as was the catchup episode, although zoomed in 4:3 scenes were edited in, and IIRC, they did a zoom in on the 4:3 opening credits to make them 16:9 for the special episode.

The closing titles of 2001 episodes were totally re-shot in 16:9. The opening titles were not re-shot. The first part with the wave and the recap have been stretched horizontally - you can see ovals rather than circles - then the scrolling right to left part is basically unaffected since it's a long panning shot really, just that you see a bigger section. Chances are they'll be revamped properly next year.

I quite loved the jazzy theme - what was so wrong with it?! Sad

I dont. My fave theme is the original 1985 music and titles. I'm still searching for a copy of the original titles and credits. No luck yet.

ITVs 14:9 digital crop annoys me. I either watch them via ananlogue or watch the ITV2 repeats as they dont use the 14:9 crop. I wonder why Coronation Street doesnt use the 14:9 crop. Too popular probabally. Its not as bad as BBC though- at least with ITV you can see the 4:3 version, with BBC you cant.
Its strange that the Oz saops went 16:9 for digital, but in The UK, EastEnders, Brookside and The Bill didnt go 16:9 till 1999, Family Affirs didnt till late october, Emmerdale and Corrie are still waiting 3 years later. Coroantion street needs new titles (not new music though) cos these ones have been in use for over 11 years!

There was a full three minute version on TV Forum when it was tvhome.co.uk/forum but that has long since vanished.

Do you have any capture software? Can you help? Can you send me a video copy? Id be grateful! Also, has anyone got the titles and credits from 1985-1990 as they had 2 versions. 1985-1990 was shot on film and credits used full 2 minute theme, 1990-1993 videotaped and credits used a shortened theme. Id love it if anyone could help.

Neighbours has seriously gone down the pan these past 3 months. Infact it god so bad in October, I stopped watching it altogether, after 3 years and 5 months ( Hurray! ).

What annoys me is the way they just can't keep the titles the same for a few years, without making big adjustments. Do you see EastEnders change their titles every 18 months or so? No. The only thing they've ever changed is the music to become more modern, the view of London two times, and the text presentation at the end, whereas Neighbours have changed their titles more times than Osama Bin Laden would think about coming out from hiding in Afghanistan!

Click here for all of the opening titles, right from when Neighbours first began. You'll have to click on the links to be taken to a page which shows some pictures of the titles, before actually clicking to download a sample in RealPlayer format.
