Bloody hell, looks like enlarged 1970's style wallpaper, at least looking at the screen grabs anyhow.
Well I've just had to watch yet another round of Countdown today. My girlfriend, who also works, never forgets to tape it which means I have to put up with her laughing at Richard's obscure choice of ties.
Oh BTW, I don't like the new set. Over The Top for my liking.

The letter board area has lost its comedic potential - remember the clip from that show with William G Stewart from London which was something to do with Countdown's something-thousandth show where Carol was putting the letters up and a hand came down from behind the board into the consonant tray and grabbed her hand? Carol screamed the place down!
Alas, it shall never have the potential to happen again!!

That hand was MINE!!!!! It was in March 1993, and since then, that clip has been shown on American TV on a show called THE WORLD'S GREATEST EVER BLOOMERS. They sent Carol a cheque for $400 for that - which she promptly gave to me!
She really is as lovely as she seems - if not lovelier!

The new set does actually work really well on screen - I agree the screen captures, here and previously, look awful, but it does work on screen.
However, one thing annoys me - the dodgy camera shots - too close and too shakey - and at the climax of the Countdown as the camera zooms in on the clock when it hits 30 seconds and the "bong" of the theme, it goes out to a quick wide shot, which just does not work.
Notice the on-screen graphics have been updated - the titles do work quite well with the new set, but I think it's time the theme was revamped slightly.
