I've been watching some of Family Feud (the American version of Family Fortunes) recently and i've noticed that they only use the electronic board for the big money round and the rest of the game they use a mechcanical board to reveal the answers. Was there a reason for this?
These are 70s' and 80's episodes I'm talking about.

Presumably because they thought it looked better and it was just the way they'd always done it.
The Big Money round would have required the electric scoreboard because, the contestants answer needs to be displayed and that could be anything so would be quite difficult to produce on the spur of the moment on the mechanic board.

The premise of the game was originally centred around a sort of Wild West feud, and the mechanical board was modelled on that period. They retained the mechanical board for nearly 20 years, while they had the electronic board from the start in 1976. So it wasn't just a case of improved technology.
This idea wouldn't have worked in the UK, so they just went with the electronic board for the whole thing.
It's interesting that on Bullseye, Jim Bowen is introducing the contestants by their ITV company, and that when introducing punters from London he refers to them as "from the Thames TV region". Presumably these episodes would have gone out on Sundays on LWT rather than Thames?
That said, he's introducing Welsh contestants as from the "Harlech TV region" - they'd been HTV for over 10 years at that point!
According to Challenge[TV], they are unable to show one episode of Play your Cards Right due to an "inappropriate question". This is a shame. Does anyone had any more details? Challenge[TV] are being a little cagey about it.
