James - sorry that is less common now than it once was - though still done to an extent.
Quite a large number of videos made for the UK, though still shot on film, are now telecined to 16:9 video for post production in 16:9.
Many broadcasters (such as the BBC and ITV) prefer to get material on 16:9, as this is increasingly the more common format for transmission (I know - I have seen quite a number arrive in this ratio, and the Box/Smash Hits occasionally forget to ARC
them back to 4:3!). It is also increasingly likely that DVD releases are going to be in 16:9 - though admittedly not all music videos released on DVD are yet in this format.
(Often the film is transferred to 16:9 VT at a more extreme aspect
ratio than 16:9 - giving letterbox bars even in 16:9)
