New Look for BBCi on Freeview

The whole of BBCi [besides the bridges] has been changed, looks a lot better now, although the Travel pages are hard to read because of the colours chosen.

The content is the same, the major changes are:
The TV screen is now on the left hand side, and I think it is larger than before
The shortcuts list is bigger
BBC News/Sport/Weather logos are in use
You can press 0 to toggle between full screen and the text service

BBC Parliament/News Multiscreens/CBeebies Games/Radio stations haven't changed

Is this how it looks on Sky?

oh this is excellent. Must nicer to use. The Entertainment colour scheme is very nice.

But why didn't they swap the back button to green while they werte at it so it matches all the 701/702 applications on Freeview?

Also you can get to the CBeebies games from the CBeebies section and to the news multiscreen from News.

The homepage of 51 isn't too good mind you.

Very Swish indeed. Like the 0 button, and the reduce to view idea is a godsend!
Maybe its just me or have BBC News been in over time what with the better than n24 titles on Global Warning and now this. Fantastic!

Technically it's a much easier to use - like the BBCi Sport service - and I can now access it through all BBC TV channels (I get two regions, which used to confuse it!). Be nice if they made it available through the radio channels as well though.

However, although any new look is strange at first, I think I preferred the simplicity of the old look.

I wish ITV would get some sort of text service going - didn't they have one on ITV Digital. Just team up with Teletext as C4 have done, and I'd like to see Teletext on five as well.

Can't get the 7-day EPG yet though. Has the listings info always been restricted to Now & Next on Freeview and it's predeccessors?

I think the 7day EPG will be restricted to digibox software. I'm currently awaiting for the new Goodmans firmware so I can try it out.

I've noticed that the bridge seems to be coded differently, the BBCi logo now appears before and it seems to react minutely differently than it used to.

I still hate the thing though, tis' so ugly and horrible to use. I thought the i-Bar was far better and wasn't so disgusting as the BBC1 bridge.

Also new offair screens on BBC3 and BBC4.

Now if only the BBC would reintroduce the channel hopper when the new MHEG spec comes out.

The new look is slightly better than the old one, although it'll take a bit of getting used to.

One thing I'd love is the ability to listen to one of the BBC radio stations whilst browsing BBCi. Is it technically possible?

This has to do with them being on a different Multiplex (1234 on SDN and the others on Mux 1).

The new version of MHEG allows you to access channels on other Muxes. Whether they'll actually implement it due to those bloody ITV Digital boxes is another matter. It's Netscape 4 for Television really.

Looks impressive and is fast.

My Humax F2-FOX T box has 7-day EPG support already, but I didn't actually know until Monday that the 7-day service had begun (when I pressed the Guide button by mistake). However, there are some channels that still only broadcast Now/Next data though.

Each Multiplex is in charge of it's own listing I believe. It has to give listings for all channels on Freeview.

ITV's Mux is generally the most useless when it comes to anything but what would you expect?

From my memory of using the Sky version, the Finance section appears within the News section, and the Main Menu appears on the overlay (or Bridge) front menu.

On first opinion I like the new look BBCi on Freeview, but I suppose it will take time to get used to, and other small changes may occur down the line. I don't expect we will see every piece of content that's on the Sky version though, due to bandwith constraints.
