It's also very common practice for TV stations to produce slightly "generic"-looking trails in the run up to a branding change in order to avoid having to make two copies of the same thing. That said, that's more an old ITV-regional thing but I wouldn't be surprised if this Robin Hood trail isn't simply an example of cost-cutting/time-saving.

On the changeover to the dancers in 2002 there were two versions of each trail made, one in the then current style and one in the new style. The 'old' ones were removed from servers overnight, and the 'new' ones came into use at the same time as the new branding.

A very good article on the new idents from Media Guardian:

Why BBC1's circles mean nothing at all

For what it's worth, a 20sec Capoeira at 6am. "The familiar London skyline welcomes you to a new week and a new day. A very good morning to you."

Closedown's been pretty mundane though lately Crying or Very sad

The trouble is that circles will mean bugger all to viewers.

Bang on. It's sad that every rebrand these days has to have a message and marketing babble so opposed to saying "hey we did it because it just looks good". Same as what the poster in the ITV thread is saying about whether viewers really have a clue about their emotions theme.

I disagree about the Beeb's new ones not being clear or entertaining though. For me, they may not be the balloon or 'those' Carlton idents but a circle theme is at least a damn sight easier to think up great executions than what we've been subjected to for four years.

i really hope not.
they're just exactly the same. two could go for something interesting, three will probably keep the same style of text (ie the large 3d text) just positioned to the right, and i would imagine BBC Four would keep the capital letters, just shifting the positioning.

A very good article? If you're slagging off marketing speak, it's best not to do it with a greater level of marketing speak than the subject itself.

You can't anthropomorphise a circle with warmth and character the way you can a BBC2 "2" for example. You can't assemble a circle with geometric ingenuity the way you can a Channel 4 "4" either. Circles have qualities but those don't include being funny or clever. Is it because a circle is inextricably associated with BBC1? I think not.

This is true; and while it offers more scope than the dancers, it's quite bland individually. And it got me thinking, symbols like the 1991 '1', BBC2's '2' and the globe, were all things that you could invision and draw on a piece of paper as a single distinct icon, they always stayed the same basic shape.

However, the dancers varied entirely across idents and you couldn't pick one to use as a single logo because it would look daft.

Now we've moved onto the 'circle' and while a plain circle or ring is easy to draw, the variations in this idea means there is yet again no definitive version that you can nail down; and that means off-screen BBC1 can only ever be represented in the 'BBC one' logo form.

Why are some people negative for the sake of being negative? Have they nothing better to do?

It's true what the article says but these new idents are still very good and a vast improvement on the dancers. They still could have done so much with the '1' from 1991 though! Wink

Does anyone have any video of the Breakfast item they could upload, likewise for yesterday's Points Of View?

Well POV sent a "viewer correspondent" to the press launch and had an interview with the controller. The press launch seemed to show clips of idents of old and of course the new ones. The only one shown full screen to us was Hippos.

During the interview the background seemed to show a 'generic' ident, full red with the circles and the logo animating on.
