I have only really managed to watch the video clip of the biker ,( without sound though on a school PC...). , and see the stills , but I do really like this circular concept , for the subtlety which would be a refreshing change compared to those dancers , wheelchair basketball players , which were annoying after a while..

I just think Red Bee missed a trick though , and that is the fact they went for "one" as opposed to the single numeral 1 in the circle centre. - it associates with Sky One a bit too much for my liking.(I'm sure that's the case with the font as well looking at one of the past logos

...)
BTW - an interesting idea for a station clock might be to have three circular arcs - the outermost would be divided into 12 segments that would represent hours , then just inside that another arc representing the mins , and then a narrower arc representing seconds that would ...(Haven't the time to represent all this now...) .

I still think it's a great set of idents, but they just don't suit BBC One. Each time I see one from those links it just reminds me of Sky One. Perhaps it's the logo, or maybe the pace of each ident, but something doesn't feel right.

After seeing the lot of idents, I agree with you here, there is something that worries me; this new look is actually quite radical compared to all that has come before on BBC1, and its style has got me thinking about what has changed, and how it doesn't feel right when it comes together.

Where we used to have a single shot that would stay still or pan slowly, we now have various angles before cutting to the main circular shot and logo.

For the first time ever, announcers can't come in with a quick anno, and will have to make sure the logo has been formed before they finish continuity in the junction.

The logo formation is a lot more 'snazzy'; gone is a constantly visible, or a faded-in logo, replaced with a sweeping animation - and instead of being at the bottom of the screen, is now in the centre. As for the 'symbol', there is a move toward an icon of sorts (the circle) but rather than being a single object, it's formed from other elements.

Music-wise, it has a jingle, but IMO, not catchy as the dancers or balloon era music was.

...Thing is, applying one or two of these new changes is no problem - it's just the fact all these things have been changed in one go, in this complete style shift, that makes this seem disjointed from the BBC One I have seen through the years to a degree -- that it's rather oddly no longer familiar enough for comfort.

Originally judging on stills of the circles alone, I feel that single shot (give or take a bit of slight panning) would be suitable, without any lengthy opening shots.

If I'm honest with myself; if someone showed me only the opening shots of these idents for the first time without me knowing the channel, and then asked me to guess which channel they were for, I would probably say Five...And this is the thing; I expected BBC One to change, but not to see almost every aspect go completely in the other direction. It just feels too much like a commercial channel.

Judging the idents against each other; Football is the worst of the lot because it's way too heavy on editing at the start, and the passing motion looks 'off', almost as if it's on a loop. However, I do genuinely find that as idents, Kites (which seems quite popular) and Moon, are the ones that stand out.

As for the Hippos, I'm indifferent; odd, but a tad amusing.

Plenty of scope for some quality additions though, and a good amount of possible Xmas ideas with this, it would seem.

The potential is there in the circle idea; it's just been executed in a way that seems so unlike the BBC and more like Five. Will be interesting to see if and how BBC2's inevitable new look will relate to this, seeing as it's AMV and not Red Bee...

Yeah, the way that there are so many shots in quite a small space of time is a bit hard on the senses. This is actually where the dancers, and in most cases the balloon, had an advantage, in that they let a single shot linger for several seconds with great effect. And the logo appears rather suddenly - no kind of slow fade-in effect, nor is it there the whole time.

Plus, I still hate the idea that idents now always have to feature people all the time, and this is the case for most of the idents, like Kites or Football or Windows. I just find these distracting from the central symbol of the channel, I guess because people have facial expressions and after you see them a thousand times, you want to smash the TV in.

With a symbol like a balloon, a 2, a 4, or a heart, they don't change, and they are exactly that - a symbol. People are not symbols, and the circle idea isn't really much of a symbol either, given that it isn't clearly defined on screen (by which I mean you can see the edges clearly - even with the ITV Hearts this worked, with first the thing to make the heart, and then the blue and yellow heart itself).

They just don't seem BBCish or British (take the Hippos & the surfer) Laughing

How many idents are there with the current look?

Wonder what the promos will look like.

I think they will have big circle in the corner of the screen with the video in and at the side have the text and logo.

Yes, interesting to see that - of the ones filmed in the UK - the furthest north they seem to have ventured was mid-Wales.

At least Auntie is being consistant. I didn't see many editions of the One Show with reporters any further north than Manchester!

I'm sure they'll have short versions. STV use quick ones for brief announcements.

I like these new idents, they are better then the dancers and I also think it was a good move to stay "BBC one" and not use "BBC 1" , wonder if that has anythng with ITV using "1"?

If they had changed it from ONE to 1, then people would complain that it looks too much like itv1.
